Someday probably, but that is far in the future. The job these guys do can't really be done totally by machines yet. Most likely scenario is it goes the way it is on the coean going ships now, most crew members are from low income third world countries. They will just import them to the US and have them unload the ships here.

The wages the longshoremen get aren't that bad IMO, they are being too greedy.
 
Society has their priorities skewed when they rush to buy paper towel and toilet paper when they fear supply disruption.
I can certainly get by without paper products.

I don't know the first thing about operating machinery on a dock but I imagine I could make time to learn for $60 an hour.

Funny how supply lines aren't affected during an election year.
