Massive port strike begins across America’s East Coast, threatening shortages and rising prices

Nearly 50,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) are on strike Tuesday against the nation’s East and Gulf Coast ports, choking off the flow of many of America’s imports and exports in what could become the country’s most disruptive work stoppage in decades.

The strike, which began at midnight, will stop the flow of a wide variety of goods over the docks of almost all cargo ports from Maine to Texas. This includes bananas, European beer, wine and liquor, along with furniture, clothing, household goods and European autos, as well as parts needed to keep US factories operating and American workers in those plants on the job, among many other goods. It could also stop US exports now flowing through those ports, hurting sales for American companies.

A wide gap remained between the union’s demands and the contract offer from the United States Maritime Alliance, which uses the acronym USMX. The maritime alliance represents the major shipping lines, all of which are foreign owned; as well as terminal operators and port authorities.
...
Depending on the length of the strike, it could result in shortages of consumer and industrial goods, which could then lead to price hikes. It could also mark a setback to the economy, which has shown signs of recovery from pandemic-induced supply chain disruptions that resulted in a spike in inflation.

It would be such sweet justice if these lazy commies got fired and replaced with illegal immigrants.

Good.

Hope they bring the system to a grinding halt.

Maybe then people will realize that it is better to make and produce here, instead of importing communist slave labor shit from China for every little thing.

They will be replaced in due time no matter what. Automation will make many of their jobs obsolete. It was one of the reasons that there was a work slowdown at the LA port, when ships were stacked up in the Pacific.

IMHO, the Union is making this move while the Biden Admin is still in the Whitehouse.

Who else has made moves because of the weak Biden Admin?

- Russia.
- Israel and Netanyahu.
- Hamas.
- Iran.
- China.
- Taliban.
- ?

Can't forget NGOs...and WEF.

I agree.

But, people complain about wages not being high enough [including some on this site] and won't be happy until milk is $29.99/gal.

More government intervention/restrictions/tariffs/bans on people and product are needed.

If I understand it correctly they currently make $39 an hour and are asking for $69 an hour.

I think they are risking the shipping companies just telling them all to fuck off and hiring cheaper non-union labor.

Or just automating it.

Or just automating it.

There's a lot of 'just automate it' going on here.
It's a lot more complicated than that.
I mean even in the IT sphere where there isn't anything physical in the mix, it can still take years to automate one process. And if something doesn't work you can usually just put it aside and not worry about it - it's not a ship that's in the way of everything else happening.

We're talking about ships that have been built all over the world in various configurations to various standards, that have to interface with docks all over the world. The entire world has figured out the most efficient way to do this and the rest of the world doesn't have US unions to deal with: so far it hasn't resulted in "just automate it". And I think that's a pretty big indicator that if they could have, they would have.

I've always despised these tuff-talkin union turds.
They'll be fired and replaced by illegal alien "scabs" (that's what they used to call 'em) and no one will care.
Then they'll be replaced by automation.
(This big jerk will still own his yacht though.)
