WTF?

NY Times

Poll Shows Liberal Ideas Gaining With Young People

Young Americans are more likely than the general public to favor a government-run universal health care insurance system, an open-door policy on immigration and the legalization of gay marriage, according to a New York Times/CBS News/MTV poll. The poll also found that they are more likely to say the war in Iraq is heading to a successful conclusion.

Rest here:

it's new york times. it'd be like fox news saying the american approval rating of the war in iraq is going up.

When I was a Young American I belived a lot of those things too. Then I got older and wiser.

I'm ok with gay marriage, though I prefer Dr Paul's position on the issue of marriage in general.

Open door immigration would be absolutely ok eventually, probably even necessary, if we got our economic goals achieved. But while we're playing corporate footsies we need some controls.

Well it's a pretty well known phenomenon that people tend to get more conservative with age ergo younger people tend to be more liberal. Makes sense to me.

I'd always thought that was just social issues, not economic ones. Maybe when most young people realize the 60 trillion dollar problem passed to them by the last generation, they'll get more pissed at government solutions to social problems.

Well, I guess I fall in the "younger" crowd (i'm 26).

A part of me is very conservative, regarding things like foriegn policy. On the homeland side, its my personal liberal side, I'd like to keep our average citizen protected as needed - such as Unemployment, Welfare, etc. Then again, I don't want our current welfare state - I just want the random peoples to be able to survive for a short duration **BETWEEN JOBS*.

*Not in place of. No welfare state, just some form of assistance as needed.

Charities are the answer. =)

what about state governments? aren't they already the primary welfare agents in this nation?

It angers me SO much when publications like the NY Times call an "open-door immigration policy" a "liberal" ideal. I'm about as staunch a liberal as you're likely to find in my neck of the woods, and I oppose this Amnesty Bill with every fiber of my being. It's not about "liberal" or "conservative"...it's about common sense. The Senators who voted to sell us out today came from both sides of the controlled-oposition divide.

The indoctrination of people starts at an early age through education. It prepares them for college where they are repeatedly subjected to liberal ideals.

It's Blowback against the Republican Party. Now young people are willing to support anything that goes against what most knucklehead Republicans in Congress want. Of course, I bet the questions asked of these young people were phrased in a stilted way in order to get the desired result.
