When it comes to their most-senior commander, the vets decisively prefer George W. Bush to Obama. Only a third approve of the way Obama is handling his job, and 42 percent of them think he has been a good commander in chief despite his decisions to bring troops home from Iraq, wind down the war in Afghanistan and increase resources for veterans. By contrast, nearly two-thirds of them think Bush, who launched both wars, was a good commander in chief.

Both Bush and Obama have sent Americans to harms way (with two third of Afghan war casualties occuring under Obama's watch), does Bush have a better image among troops because he seemed to also show care for men/women he sent to harms way?
Quick search shows lots of photos of Bush spending time with wounded soldiers but only couple of Obama photos with wounded soldiers at SOTU type political showcase events.

As a veteran, I am really finding this disdain for people who served, as well as these foolish stereotypes placed on us, disturbing.

Not everyone joins the military to kill brown people, and go raze villages. And most never even see anything related to that.

I really wish people would wake up (reading Vance would help) and not join. Sacrificing one's mind and body for the criminal American Empire is one of the most foolish things a person could do, especially since they're treated like trash once they come home.

I joined for selfish reasons.

Firstly, I was a young man with a wife and two toddlers, and used the Army to help me get my family's feet on the ground. Secondly, I also saw it as a chance to receive training and knowledge I could not get anywhere else. And combined with my upbringing as half coon ass and half redneck, I am more than capable of insuring my family is taken care of in a SHTF scenario.

And most importantly, it opened my eyes to the world in a way that the only way to understand is to have traveled to multiple countries yourself. Now, bear in mind I joined during peace time. I understand the wariness of people who rushed to join because they "wanted to go fight in the Middle East".

Bush was a mediocre in his capabilities and his blunderous policies did great harm to America, Iraq being one of his biggest mistakes.
But I'm convinced now that had Obama been in the office in 2001, he would have been worse than Bush.
Obama has been so transparently opportunistic, deceitful, self-serving in his political career that next to him even Bush starts to appear a "better leader". Which is quite an accomlishment for Obama.

Bush did seem to be able to relate to people , troops or civilians, better than Obama. That is necessary trait for leaders.
This is another example, came across this photo in Obama drone news photos . Even at the height of so called global wars, Bush was also doing this sports diplomacy while his war policies were killing many brown people in same region.

I can only imagine that this is bullshit. Some may recall that the standard for being diagnosed with PTSD used to require a specific traumatic incident. This requirement was downgraded to simply being in theater. Obviously, this resulted in more claims. Granted, the statement above did not mention PTSD specifically, but I would imagine that this would be a large factor in their statistics.

I guess I am with the worst of them. I joined the Army (Reserve) as a Combat Engineer because I wanted to blow shit up. I was already in college and living in suburbia, so I didn't need to enlist. When I was in the MEPS station, I maxed out the ASVAB and some of the people who joined the military out of desperation had suggested that I should have joined the Air Force instead, or choose a different MOS. I told them that I wouldn't get to shoot guns if I joined the Air Force or chose a non-combat arms MOS.

Another factor to join was that I got to shower with men on a daily basis.

Might be a bit to that . Ten percent of the Country are veterans , roughly , one percent has seen life & death . In WW2 as an example , if you had a " combat " job , and lived , you served , more or less , continuously until it was over . Iraq & the Afghan , you basically have this small % of guys , if they stayed in , performing , probably five tours in ten years . That is not good on the home front . If they wise up , opt out , what job awaits them @ home in bumfuck ? Not much ........

I have never had this ptsd , I have experienced situations that would make the skin crawl on a hard man . There are some differences though in my experiences and todays youth . We were all hard drinkers and self managed , self medicated . You thought you needed to discuss something ? you did that over 4 cases of beer and a trusted buddy . Nobody talked to others , took meds , sought " professional " help and you took care of your responsibilities and were happy to be alive to do so . You also did not reenlist for multiple tours in a loose , loose scenario just because there were no jobs . You knew if you had to , you could go home , take any crap you found and stay with family , relatives , friends , if you had too to get back on your feet ..... you did not have car payments , health ins concerns , net , cable , cell phones , microwaves , cd's , sat tv , big screens , blackberries , text , twitter expensive shoes and electronics for children ...... what you had , was dinner every night at the table with the whole family , beer, hunting , fishing , wood cutting , gardening and a lawn mower (self help therapy ) .

I'll stop feeling disdain when I stop seeing vets glorified everywhere else. Until then, I don't honestly feel bad.

Those of you who are now libertarians or otherwise anti-war, I don't judge you now, obviously. We were all statists at one point, whether we admit to it or not. And I only became completely 100% anti-state about eight months ago. But for those who continue to pawn themselves for the State I have no sympathy and I have nothing but disgust. Doubly so if they profess to be Christians. And anyone who cares enough about their "veteran" status to flaunt it (to be clear, I don't view discussing it on a forum to be "flaunting" it, I mean people who continue to dress in their uniforms, march in the parades, demand that you "thank them for their service" and such) are just as disgusting as child molesters.

I can't claim to understand what they've been through or why they do it but I will advise them not to join. Don't do it. You'll be joining up for the worst things the US govt does. I understand many are under the illusion that the are fighting for freedom but that is completely not true. We are losing freedoms constantly and no military units are doing anything to stop it.
