In the only recent poll to ask native people about the subject, 90 percent of respondents did not consider the term offensive

The Washington Whores?

P.J. O’Rourke wrote a book about 20 years ago about the U.S. government called Parliament of Whores. I couldn’t help but think of it when I was informed that the Washington Redskins football team might have to change its name because the name Redskins is so “racially insensitive.” Why is it that no one seems to mind that the military names its weapons systems after Indian tribes: Apache, Comanche, Black Hawk, Chinook, Iroquois and Kiowa helicopters and Tomahawk cruise missiles?

The ones I know are more offended by Columbus Day and the plans to build a pipeline on their sacred burial grounds.

Is there a special word for the Injun variant of "Uncle Tom?" "Tonto," maybe?

Buncha Tontos ...

I'm waiting for Oyarde to chime in before I have an opinion.

As I have said many times, Redskins is no big deal. Most of us redskins dislike "Native American" far more than Indian or Redskin.

The Indians I know call themselves Indians. They claim it comes from the Spanish In Dios, meaning "With God". If that isn't historically correct, it is a damn clever way to rewrite their own history for positive purposes.

They also call the Indian spiritual path the Red Road.

as a Norwegian, i'm offended by the Minnesota Vikings...no...not because of the name, but because they're a shitty team.

Ya I don't go to watch the game anymore.

They are a bit shy when I approach them.

What about the Braves and their "tomahawk chop", are they offended by that?

A poll from 2004 with a sample size of 786 people who were vaguely asked if they identify as 'Indian'. I feel like such a poll wouldn't necessarily target the people more likely to be offended by the name. Like I've said before though, it's up to the team and NFL to decide.

Thanksgiving is much more offensive to natives.

This has always been the case. Every poll shows white people are more offended than the people that are supposedly suppose to be. There is like a group of white-guilters whose thinking basically goes: "if they're not offended, we'll just be offended for them."
