These are the same people who try to say that libertarians don't matter and that Rand will never win over the "conservative" base, but now that he is taking actions that appeal to the people they said he had no chance with, they are going full circle and pretending for the first time pretty much ever, that libertarians are relevant.

I think the labeling is stupid personally, but I'm just summarizing the kind of thought process that they are trying to peddle. Most libertarians I know think that the primary role of government is national defense, and that starts with the border.

I think are terms he has applied to himself and some more. I don't think he ever called himself just a 'libertarian'.

He doesn't explicitly call himself a libertarian, he talks instead about being "libertarian-leaning" or favoring "the libertarian approach to...", etc.

This is because libertarianism is still a dirty word for many Republicans.

...quite a few actually don't understand the difference between libertarian and Libertarian, so if Rand calls himself a libertarian, they think he isn't in the GOP.
