He did not. The conscription was suspended by ministry of defense, not ended. It was done this way, because ending it would not succeed - the president would veto it for sure. Theoretically, it can be re-enabled anytime.

Well, I believe he was inprisoned by communists for being anti-communist back when it was dangerous. He used to be quite reasonable and his party is supposed to be pro free market. But it's all politics, let's rememember. The most corrupt thing people invented.

It is the equivalent. I know that for many people the US is all they've ever known, so these kinds of events do not carry a sense of significance. But I worry for my relatives in Poland and hope that this is not a coup. I suspect it is.

It reminds me of the "tragedy" of Ron Brown... remember? On April 3, 1996 Ron Brown 34 others had died their Air Force plane crashed into a Croatian mountainside, "accidentally.

I suspect it is as well. Poland had by far the most "pro-United States" government among large European nations.

I'd have to disagree with your assessment of the debris field anything now is mere speculation, but having worked a few crash sights it looks like a long path plowed through the trees with debris scattered all along it where it broke up as it went, he just sank into the trees on final. Not much fire though, I wonder what his fuel state was. It'll be a long time before, if ever, we know what really went wrong.

My sympathies to the Polish people they have endured much throughout history, and they will they will overcome this as well.

I agree with your assessment, though how some of the landing gear landed in the trees has me scratching my head.

No, 96 people total. 8 were crew, so 88 were in the delegation. Among them were many different people, not all politicians/gov officials. It' just media talking mostly about them.
But yes, there were at least 10 lawmakers, 6 generals, many gov officials...

Well, there was a presidential election coming this year and I can assure you, he would loose big time. He wasn't popular and his successful election 5 years ago was a total surprise - his opponent had MUCH better poll numbers (EACH poll) and many people just thought it's a done deal and stayed home, while his voters were much more devoted (lots of catholic "fundamentalists", voting robots).

He was not a free market advocate AFAIK.

The landing gear laying upside down by itself (apparently) in the middle of a bunch of trees was what made me think explosion. Also the report of small scattered fires...

Guess we'll see (maybe) but this crash is really bizarre. What are the odds???
