Ladyjade,

Could you please provide the mailing/shipping address of your former school for those of us that want to donate goods, supplies, and food?

Thanks.

I think shipping is such a mess right now that they don't want to accept random shipments of stuff. What they really need is cash so they can obtain what they need.

What I was afraid of, and is kind of confirmed by this article:

"Fear of Poor Hampering Aid in Haiti"
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest_contributors/article6991697.ece

is that a lot of aid workers newly arrived in country maybe don't understand what they are dealing with and the mobs of Haitians very easily freak them out. I heard about one food truck that arrived in the city to distribute supplies and when they saw this wave of people, they gassed it and ran away *facepalm* I guarantee you those people meant no harm to the driver or crew. They just don't understand the mannerisms and the ways of Haitians. They look angry and boisterous to Americans I think, but they're really not.

That's why I'm really scared about all this talk of "security" and the military going in. They are going to start pretty much randomly shooting Haitians for stupid reasons, I just know it. "Looting".... don't get me started. My fear is that they will adopt some sort of attitude that there needs to be calm before the aid comes. Well, the longer the aid takes, the less calm people will be. This whole situation brewing with UN and US presence is not going to go well, I fear.

No, the best thing really is to help the missions already on the ground who are used to this, who won't freak out because some Haitian looks irrational to them. The missionaries know and understand what is going on and how to help best. All they need is access to all the supplies and aid that is being sent.

That goes along with something I saw on TV last night. A truck had passed out food, and was gone, but the empty boxes were still there. A small crowd was still milling about, and the reporter looked nervous as he was doing his piece. He said that he had originally thought "there was going to be a riot, but that wasn't the case."

In the meantime, the people were picking up the empty boxes and tossing them. It wasn't like they were hurling them in anger, or even that they were digging through them to make sure all the food was gone...they were just tossing the boxes. I thought it was odd, but I haven't been to Haiti. :)
