Pets on Pot: The Newest Customer Base for Medical Marijuana

When Lisa Mastramico needed relief for her ailing tabby, Little Kitty, she turned to an unlikely source: marijuana.

At 12 years old, the cat had arthritis. For a long while she spent her days hiding in a closet, where Ms. Mastramico had built her a bed of plush blankets. After trying various supplements that proved ineffectual, she went to a meeting for Women Grow, an industry group for cannabis entrepreneurs.

She was not sold on the idea right away. “My concern was that it’s not my place to get my cat high,” said Ms. Mastramico, the director of a public access television network in Long Beach, Calif.

But with Little Kitty becoming increasingly isolated, it was time to give it a try. She got a medical marijuana card and purchased two edible oils made for pets and derived from cannabis that she squirts into her pet’s mouth.

Little Kitty doesn’t hide anymore. In fact, she’s more like her old self: sunbathing on the living room carpet, playing with Ms. Mastramico’s other cat, Valentina. “When I’ve given it to her, she’s never acted high: falling face-first into her food bowl, chowing down,” Ms. Mastramico said. “She comes out and socializes, wants to be in your lap, wants to be petted. It’s a very noticeable difference.”

Other animal lovers who have turned to cannabis-based products to alleviate a host of pet maladies, including seizures, inflammation, anxiety and pain, are reporting similar results. Although they have not been approved by regulators, marijuana-based treatments are being used not only for cats and dogs, but for pigs, horses and domesticated wild animals.

I would love to get my hands on some of this for my doge.:(

They probably should have mentioned that they generally don't give the animals products containing THC

That is 99% pure CBD - cannabis is usually about 0.2% CBD unless you get a high CBD strain, so a little of this stuff will go a long way.

How would I know how to dose him? I wouldn't want my doge to be the first documented cannabis death.

Impossible - even if there was THC, it is nearly impossible to OD on THC.. but this is CBD, which is non-toxic, your body makes it. It doesn't even get you "high" (like THC does), although I would argue it is relaxing based on my experience. I would start out low, and give giving him higher doses until he feels better, mostly for expense sake. But there is a very broad range of amount that will "work".

High CBD buds contain as much as about 20% CBD, so this is only 5 times more potent than that.. I wouldn't trip if my dog ate a few grams of high CBD buds, except I'd be out of the buds. However I would think your dog would get relief from a very small amount, because like I said most cannabis people consume contains about 0.2% CBD. Cancer and seizure patients in particular benefit from extremely high doses of CBD which is why those strains have been bred.

Treatibles CBD dog treats contain 2.7 mg of CBD. 1 gram is 1000 mg of CBD, so a gram of the CBD would make 370 dog treats (for $50) .You don't want to heat the CBD up too much, though. Maybe mix it with some peanut butter and something or other to make it harden, throw in a half gram of the CBD isolate and make 150 very small treats. You can give him 1-2 treats, a couple or several times a day, and figure out how much is effective. Or.. you can just eyeball it.. Put a little peanut butter on a spoon, then put a little tiny dab of that powder on the peanut butter and put it in his dish.

The story referenced a 2012 study that found that two dogs who ate large amounts of marijuana-infused butter died, out of a sample of 125 dogs that were believed to have ingested marijuana.
They will just lie around for two days and you have to give them water drips to keep them hydrated. Don't ask me how I know this.

Dogs don't eliminate THC rapidly as their owner do ^^^.

They stay intoxicated longer and keep getting higher. Yea, like Danno said, THC is not for pups.

CBD good.

Every animal I have ever had would eat my pot if I left it out. I put some in the attic one time and the squirrels came in and ate it. A mouse got into a drawer that had some in it and ate it all. Marijuana and hemp both are medicine and food to almost all life forms on the planet that is why it is illegal.

My cat already sleeps and eats all day and plays all the time. Why would I want to give him something to get him high? It's bad enough he has a bad catnip addiction and will go wild at the scent of it.

Though I do wonder if he'd like getting stoned and watching cartoons with me.
