Petition To Split California Into Six States Given Green Light

starting with one person collecting just ten signatures and then each of those ten collecting ten each, and so on, it would only take 6 "generations" of signature collecting to gather enough signatures....

1 - 10 - 100 - 1,000 - 10,000 - 100,000 - 1,000,000

While I'd prefer three states (a simple North-South divide and Jefferson), I will sign this initiative and in the unlikely possibility it is on the ballot, I'll vote for it.

I don't understand the logic of the map. I've never looked at Irvine and thought "Oh, that belongs to the same region as Riverside and San Bernadino"

but I'm glad we'd be keeping San Diego as opposed to other maps.

eh. You'd actually end up with a couple of more Republicans if that means anything to you.

How many of those 6 new states (12 senators instead of 2) would end up 'R's as opposed to 'D's?

And then we have other initiatives to split some other states. How would it all work out in the wash?

They should send Mark Dice out there! He'll get the siggys.

Yep.

That is not what I said. But splitting Calif into multiple states giving them more Senators is a bad idea.
You know what I would kind of like a senator that somewhat represents the state of Jefferson. The way that is split it would break the complete Democratic strangle hold on the state government.

Depends upon how the split is done. This proposal would guarantee Democrat Senators for four States, and create two swing States. It would increase the number of Democrats in the US Senate.

Yeah, natural boundaries make more sense than what they have proposed. It would be better to have coastal States and inland States, which would be divided by mountain ranges, and would also be totally different in terms of rural vs. urban.

If Cali could do it, so could Colorado, and all the other states considering the same thing. I say shake the damn place up!

'Six Californias' plan may make 2016 ballot

SAN FRANCISCO — A plan backed by venture capitalist Tim Draper to split California into six states has gained enough signatures to make the November 2016 ballot, the plan's backers say.

A Twitter account belonging to the nonprofit Six Californias tweeted on Monday that "#SixCalifornias will be submitting signatures in Sacramento tomorrow for placement on the November 2016 ballot. Stay tuned for coverage!"

On Tuesday, Draper told USA Today the campaign had garnered 1.3 million signatures, well over the approximately 808,000 needed.

Draper is a founding member of the venture capital firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson, known for its investments in successful growth ventures such as Hotmail, Baidu, Tesla Motors and Skype. Recently, Draper won the federal government's auction of bitcoins once owned by online drugs portal Silk Road. He's championed the political break-up of the state for over a year, but it's taken until recently for the plan to gain some momentum.

Draper and other supporters of the break-up argue that the state's 38 million people would be better served by smaller governments and elected officials who would be able to work more closely with their constituents.

"If we have six Californias and we in effect dissolve the one we've got, those six allow us a new start," Draper says in a video posted on the Six Californias website. Each state, which would have its own capital and legislature, would be able to write its own constitution.

The six carved out states would look like this:

Jefferson: The northern part of the state, including Humboldt and Mendocino counties.
North California: The wine country counties of Sonoma and Napa, as well as the Sierra Nevada region.
Silicon Valley: Including San Francisco, San Jose and most of what's considered the San Francisco Bay Area.
Central California: The vast central valley farm region, including Tulare and Fresno counties.
West California: Including Santa Barbara and Los Angeles.
South California: Including what's called the Inland Empire of San Bernadino and Riverside, plus San Diego.

The plan has met with resistance from California's Democratic majority, and a Field Poll found 59% of Californians surveyed were against the plan, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our union is already perfect. Unless we're adding more territories or taking over Canada I have no interest in this obscene seditiousness.

Idea makes SOME sense unti it gets all SNAFUBARd up.

What is essentially being proposed is giving each urban center their own State, where the urban areas would dominate huge rural, agricultural areas. Kind of like creating 6 New York States.
