A new petition is calling for a federal investigation into the death of Steven Davis, a 35-year-old inmate who died following a violent encounter with corrections officers at Donaldson Correctional Facility in Alabama. The petition, titled "Justice for Steven Davis – Demand Accountability and Reform in Alabama Prisons," is directed at the Alabama governor, attorney general, Alabama Department of Corrections, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the Alabama Legislature.
According to the petition, Davis was assaulted on Oct. 4, 2019, by multiple officers, including Officer Roderick Gadson, who allegedly used deadly force. The petition claims Gadson beat Davis with a baton, stomped on his head, and slammed him to the ground, resulting in every bone in Davis's face being broken. Davis was taken off life support the following day, and the medical examiner ruled his death a homicide caused by blunt force trauma to the head.
The Alabama Attorney General’s Office declined to prosecute, and the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) deemed the use of force "justified." Witnesses have reportedly contradicted official claims, stating Davis was unarmed during the assault.

Davis' case was among those profiled in the HBO documentary: The Alabama Solution which was recently released. ADOC and the governor's office have not commented on the documentary which paints a horrifying picture of violence, inhumane conditions, overcrowding and understaffing inside Alabama prisons using cellphone video captured by inmates.

The petition demands a federal investigation into Davis's death, the immediate termination of Officer Gadson, and his permanent disqualification from working in any correctional institution. It also calls for independent oversight of the ADOC and comprehensive reform of use-of-force policies within Alabama’s prison system.
The petition highlights that Officer Gadson has faced multiple lawsuits for alleged abuse and was promoted twice after Davis's death, now holding the rank of lieutenant at St. Clair Correctional Facility. The petitioners express outrage over Gadson's $200,029 salary in 2024, funded by taxpayers.
Davis's death has become a symbol of abuse and lack of accountability in Alabama’s prison system, as featured in the HBO documentary "The Alabama Solution." The petitioners demand immediate action to address these issues.
