Paul raises $1M since launch

By Jesse Byrnes
April 08, 2015, 03:49 pm

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) raised $1 million in donations through his website to "defeat the Washington machine" a day after officially launching his presidential campaign.

The ticker on Paul's site passed the six figure mark around 3:45 p.m. EST on Wednesday, with default donation amounts starting at $20.16.

Before reaching the threshold, Paul sought to reassure potential donors that the money would be well spent, appearing in front of a McDonald's while in New Hampshire.

"We're eating at the Dollar Menu at McDonald's to make sure your money is spent wisely," Paul said in a video posted to his Facebook.

Dollar menu???

c'mon Rand. Splurge a little and have a Subway sandwich.

Uhh... has Cruz really raised $31 million since he announced?! How is that even possible?

We don't want you to get a hart attack from the combination of stress and mcdonalds. Eat real food, be an example.

That figure was for pro-Cruz PACs. They can take unlimited money from wealthy donors. The vast majority of that came from just 2 guys, I suspect.

The rumor is he will soon have that much in a PAC. Not in his campaign account. Its possible with big donors. Rand has more connections than Cruz, so we'll see how he does in PAC world.

Super-pacs raised $31 million.

This is the insane bullshit that the Cruz camp has even liberty people eating up.

The pro Cruz PACs have said they EXPECT the $31 million to be fully donated this week. The Cruz PACS did not raise $31M yet, it is merely expected they will.

People are running away with this like its a done deal.

Although, I read that 20+ million has already been raised.

If he doesn't raise near that amount he will be discredited now. Everyone will say he did not meet expectations. There's no easier way to kill a campaign than for it to fail to meet its fundraising expectations. I tend to think the Cruz camp knows what they are talking about. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Also, Rand would not be running if he didn't secure some dough through other sources. No matter how the media spins it...Rand is a serious contender and his campaign has been strategically calculated. Even if he doesn't get nominated he will certainly give the establishment a run for their money. But Bush is the one to beat in the primaries. He's got connections.

Rand will do really well in the debates unless we have another false flag attack and Washington goes batshit crazy again. Most Americans know that building is much more preferable to blowing stuff up.

$1M in slightly over 24 hours is solid.

Anyway, as for Cruz: how much you wanna bet that the deep pockets financing him are the same ones financing the current smear campaign against Rand?

...aka, Bush and Co.

...aka Ted's former employer when he was an adviser for G.W.

Unlikely. That ad has "Eastablishment GOP" (and no, that's not a typo) all over it. If there's one person they hate more than Rand, it's Ted Cruz.

My money is on backers of Jeb Bush...

Seems pretty clear that Bush and Co are behind the ad.

While the New York Times reported the basics of the attack on Rand, it left out the most interesting nugget; the hit is being orchestrated by those very close to Jeb Bush. According to the Times, Black Rock Group, a public affairs firm, is “advising” the new Super PAC. Black Rock is yet another GOP consulting firm housed at 66 Canal Street in Alexandria, VA, the Republican party establishment’s outpost across the river from DC. The firm is run by Carl Forti and Brian Jones, longtime operatives in Bush World. Forti is currently political director of American Crossroads, the GOP establishment Super PAC guided by former Bush political guru Karl Rove. Jones has had leading campaign rolls with Bush, John McCain and Mitt Romney. Jones has extensive ties with mainstream media outlets, which helps explain why the New York Times is breaking a story about a GOP nomination contest. Republicans, after all, are very adept at using the mainstream media to attack other Republicans. The titular head of the Super PAC attacking Rand is Rick Reed, a key GOP strategist for the “Swift Boat” campaign against John Kerry more than a decade ago. Reed is largely retired from political campaigns, but seems prepared to suit up again when Bush World calls.

What do you mean by East Coast Establishment and why do you think they bought the ad rather than Bush people?

If there's one person they hate more than Rand, it's Ted Cruz.

Well, I think Cruz is a Bush family pet.

Again, not sure who you mean by "they" (E. Coast Establishment) here....

My money is on backers of Jeb Bush...

Backing Cruz? Yes, I agree.

My biggest fear is that Rand will, like his father, not spend the money wisely, so I'm heartened to see him explicitly say he's going to spend with care.
