Pataki Out

I do not see what the point of his campaign was other than maybe setting the stage for 2020 or 2024.

Also being reported by The Hill, but not confirmed yet.

Former New York Gov. George Pataki (R) is reportedly dropping out of the presidential race after months of lagging near zero percent in polls.

"Scoop: @GovernorPataki is calling his NH supporters this afternoon telling him he will drop his bid for president #fitn," Boston Globe political reporter James Pindell tweeted on Tuesday afternoon.

Pataki made little impression in the undercard debates and failed to build an infrastructure of any meaningful size. He was struggling to raise money but insisted to The Hill at the recent Las Vegas debate that he was still holding fundraisers and could still marshal support from donors.

The Hill has contacted Pataki's campaign for comment.

Silver lining is that if Rand decides to participate in the underdog debate, it seems slightly more credible.

It will be interesting to see if or how this affects the undercard debate. What are they going to do, have the huckster and santorum debate each other? What if one of those two also drops out? They're going to be put in the position of either having to scrap this whole undercard debate nonsense and let everyone onto the actual debate stage, or continue to exclude candidates and have to blatantly admit that that is the goal. The "too many candidates" excuse isn't going to hold water much longer, especially if either santorum or the huckster drops out.

Rand says he will not appear to debate the loser table because he is not a loser, he basically told those losers to drop out.

Right now it looks like Fiorina will not make the main debate under current announced criteria, but Kasich will (on basis of polling 5th in NH). So, without additional dropouts, if Rand sticks to his guns about not participating in the undercard (if he doesn't qualify for the main debate), there will be 3 candidates in the January 14 undercard: Fiorina, Huckabee, and Santorum.

Bloomberg will be so heart-broken.

Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert, New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (C), New York Governor George Pataki and New York City Mayor-elect Michael Bloomberg join hands December 9, 2001 at Sharon's office in Jerusalem.

This was a long time coming, I expected him to drop out long before Graham or Jindal, he's pretty much a nobody outside of New York and his only claim to fame is being the governor of NY during 9/11, and the whole 9/11 niche didn't really work for Guiliani back in 2008 when it was still fresher in everybody's mind.

Sad news.

Like or hate his politics, Pataki was intelligent, level headed, and was the best NY governor we've had.

Would much rather have seen someone polling higher than Rand drop out.

I don't think anybody polling higher than Rand will drop out before Iowa, unless things get bad enough for Carson that he decides to drop before Iowa to save himself some embarrassment. If he did, it would probably help Rand greatly with debate access. Kasich and Christie are both stubborn enough to hang on until New Hampshire and if Christie manages to take 2nd place there, you'll be seeing his fat ass for a while longer. I'm not sure what is going on with Fiorina, or if her dropping would really help Rand all that much, but just from the standpoint of the debates actually being watchable, her dropping out would be great.

Fiorina, Kasich and Christie dropping out will do nothing good for Paul rather than free up space on a stage. I don't believe any of their supporters would gravitate to Paul. Carson, perhaps. That's just my gut feeling.

Not sure if Gov. Pataki helped himself as a VP candidate for anyone - but he did give
Sen. Graham someone to listen and grin while Lindshe talked the CiC shuffle at the undercard.

No need for anyone to be in any undercard event after Santorum drops.

Exactly those three need to stay in the race as long as possible so that they can spread the establishment vote thinner especially in New Hampshire.
