If one were to avoid the real ID, would getting a passport beforehand help surviving without the ID?

I was thinking if I ever wanted to travel, I could use my passport instead of the real ID.

p.s., the Real ID will be required not only for travel, but also for opening
bank accounts (financial institutions will require it), entering any federal
buildings (think United States Post Office -- this is insane!) or any court
houses.

Yep. The patriot act requires us to have a state issued ID to open a bank account. National ID is the next step.

Carry your passport in a metal suit case to block the chips signal.

My license has a NAU symbol on it.

>/ NC ...

It does? Care to share a pic with your personal info blurred out? That's pretty crazy if true.

You can just put your RFID-equipped passport in the microwave for 20-30 seconds to disable the chip.

Regarding RFID:

Keep in mind that the chips do have a range. It's not like you're carrying around a GPS tracking unit to be read via satellites or anything.

I'm opposed to RealID as well, but the fear of RFID by itself is a bit extreme, IMHO.

It is not "fear" of the RIFD that bothers me.

It is the concept of the RIFD that I find offensive.

That doesn't work, there are articles on the 'net about how to disable them, should you choose to do so, but the microwave method doesn't work.

Think hammer, but at your own risk--it's illegal.

So does this mean that a kid will not be able to open a savings account at the local credit union?

Kids can get state issued ID's too. I would think that a kid could open an account without an ID iff their parent was with them and they had ID.

You also are required to have the state issued ID present every time you make a banking transaction, although many bank tellers dont enforce this.

That will cause visible burn damage on the card. Suggest using more sophisticated hacking / disabling techniques. Hit it with a HAMMER and just smash the chip.
