THE VERDICT
Like its predecessor, the AR.Drone 2.0 is a really fun machine. Unlike its predecessor, version 2.0 requires almost no getting used to--it’s intuitively simple to fly right out of the box. The enhanced controllability enabled by the magnetometer and the “Absolute Control” feature make piloting this drone easy and extremely enjoyable. Children can fly it (with adult supervision, of course). Adults can fly it, and will enjoy it as much as children. The price, while perhaps not exactly right for every budget, is competitive in the context of higher-end model helicopters or airplanes, and where quadrotors are concerned it really doesn’t have any competition in its weight class. You can cobble together your own quadcopter from various DIY kits and the like, but you’re still going to end up paying dearly for the privilege. For a quality out-of-the-box technology at an accessible price point, Parrot is really carving out a nice little niche in the recreational drone space.
That being said, with battery life being so underwhelming it’s difficult to promise hours of free-flying fun--perhaps it’s more accurate to promise many 20-minute chunks of piloting glee. But Parrot got so many things right with this aircraft. It really is a significant improvement over the first-generation AR.Drone--which wasn’t a bad drone by any stretch. Batteries get better, and sensors and electronics get cheaper, smaller, and more efficient. I personally wouldn’t let the short battery life discourage me from taking the current AR.Drone 2.0 home from the store, but the trajectory of the product line thus far suggests to me that we’re only starting to scratch the surface of what these drones can do. I’m really more excited to see what improvements Parrot is able to pack into version 3.0.
And, yes, the drone’s front camera can now shoot in 720p HD at 30 frames per second, which it beams right to the screen of whatever smartphone or tablet you are using to pilot, giving you a drone’s-eye view. But it now also records that footage, dumping video and still images to an on-board USB drive or to the pilot’s control device. Privacy advocates might have something to say about that, but as a feature it lends the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 an added aspect of utility beyond simple recreation.

It has a camera so you can spy on your neighbors... don't do that though; its probably illegal.
How about that $299 app ?

Hmm. From the comments:

Now hre's a thought. If the public can afford to build these things and, say, spy on thier significant others, why not a police force buy a few huundred and have them go on routine patrols? If the public isnt as scared as suspected, then PR wont be as bad, will it? Oh, and if @aldronslasthope comes on here, please be respectful this time.

Wouldn't be a good police drone with the current battery life though, it only stays up about 20 minutes at most.

That is really cool. I could use that.... things like that are exceedingly cool. I want one

i want one to fly overhead of my local police force during stops.

That would be pretty funny. Keep one in the trunk of your car and anytime you see cops stopping someone, get out and fly over for a looksee. I imagine you would throw the average cop into an absolute fit.

1: do citizens have an expectation of privacy from above?
2: if police arent doing anything wrong, what do they have to worry about?

i am seriously looking into one of these. there are some limitations to outdoor flight, but i think for $400 ($300 for copter, $100 extra/stronger batteries) you can get flying and see if it is something you really want to get into.

may also fly this around the downtown area, just to see if anyone cares / notices...

What is the operating range of this thing? How far away can you be from it?

its configurable, based on where you are flying it (inside/outside)
i believe the specs say it will go to 165 ft high, but i cant verify that. it is controlled via wireless signal (802.11), so range may depend on what is in the area.
i would imagine the 165 ft is related to signal strength, and can be applied to each direction.

the website for the copter has a good bit of info: http://ardrone2.parrot.com/videos/

from what i have read:
the down pointing camera isnt very good.
the front facing camera is at an odd angle. it makes it easy to fly via first person, but it makes filming the ground a bit harder.
the stock battery is weak. only 6-8 mins of fly time. new batteries are available. can get up to 20 mins fly time.
not sure how the processing power of the controller (ipad/android) effects the control of the copter, but it seems like most are controlling them with ipads

This is the direction technology is headed. Nothing can stop it. It may not be entirely practical now, but it will be in the near future. It will be used by the state against the people... but it will also be used by the people against the state. And the state is very inefficient. They will overpay for technology in attempt to stay ahead of the curve, but they will never get ahead of the curve. The time when the watchers can be realistically watched is fast approaching...
