The nation's top military commander and the secretary of Defense testified Thursday that they both supported a plan to arm Syrian rebels that was rebuffed by President Obama shortly before the November elections.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and CIA Director David Petraeus proposed arming the opposition to Syrian President Bashar Assad last summer, The New York Times reported over the weekend. The White House rejected that plan.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the leading supporter of arming the rebels and for greater U.S. intervention in Syria, pressed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey on the issue during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on the Benghazi attack.
“Did you support the recommendation by secretary of State — then-secretary of State —Clinton and then-head of CIA Gen. Petraeus that we provide weapons to the resistance in Syria?” McCain asked. “Do you support that?”
“We do,” Panetta said.
“We did,” concurred Dempsey.
More than 60,000 people have died in the 23-month-old uprising. The Obama administration is worried about U.S. arms falling in the hands of Islamist militants and has pushed for regional powers to take the lead in resolving the crisis.
