Benton Harbor, Mich. - Whirlpool will receive a $19.3 million stimulus fund grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to accelerate its work on smart grid appliances.

The grant, part of the DOE's Smart Grid Investment Grant program, will be dispersed over a two-year period and will be matched by the manufacturer's own investments.

The smart appliances will be capable of modifying their power consumption in reaction to signals received from the nation's next-generation power grid.

Whirlpool recently announced that it would deliver one million U.S.-made smart dryers by 2011 that could save consumers in some markets $20 to $40 per year while also benefitting the environment.

"The grants ... are a great example of public and private partnerships that will create the next generation of energy saving solutions," said Whirlpool North America president Mike Todman.

The company hopes that all the electronically controlled appliances it produces worldwide will be capable of receiving and responding to signals from the smart grid by 2015.

Ya its going to be funny in a few years when your washer and dryer will not turn on during peak hours.....More control over your life.

Or won't turn on when the government decides you've been bad and need to be punished.

OK.
Isolationism is looking better and better to me.
Would you all not agree with me now that the Zombies are at the door?
I've been saying it for awhile.
Look.
See them now?
First thing we have to do is eliminate the Zombies in our yard.
Then we have to develop a defense system to prevent anymore from entering our perimeter.
You can not negotiate with Zombies either by the way.
Don't open the door unless you're ready to fight.
The biggest thing I'm afraid of is that we have already allowed too many Zombies into the yard.
If that is the case, well... Not much glory in starving to death or being eaten alive.

What a coincidence. The congressman from that area is a multimillionaire whose grandfather was co-founder of Whirlpool. And he's on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Edit: He's currently ranked the 31st wealthiest member of Congress. And the biggest chunk of his fortune is the share of ownership of Whirlpool he still has.
