And I thought I was paranoid. On the other hand, if thieves get the drop on you, they will torture you to get the combination. So just give it to them. Of course if you don't KNOW the combination, things might go poorly for you.

I may get a safe eventually, but I figure I'll just be stashing them for now. Are there any good hiding places one can recommend or is this the kind of thing each person just comes up with on their own?
haven't done the water/food thing yet, but we're debt free... just saving for a house (for once the housing crash wraps up)
This is a must!!! Please don't invest in any more PMs until you are well stocked up? Otherwise, as I already stated, you might end up spending your PMs on food and supplies that are going to significantly increase in cost.
point very well taken. i'll pitch it to my wife this way. thanks.
Beautiful. Keep me posted. I'm interested.![]()
so as i mentioned this to my wife, we both realized we know nothing about how to go about stocking food/water. any quick tips? how to store? what to store? how to keep food from spoiling?

Silver AEs. Pretty happy. I figured this would get me on my way, after thinking about it for so long (about 2 years).
Now... where to hide it?

Store in a dry, cool environment. Canned veggies, fruits, and meats (tuna, chicken, and beef) are good for around 2 years. If you have a COSTCO account you can get food in bulk for very a reasonable cost - usually. You can get a pack of 48 Top Ramen for around 6.50. Not the most healthy of foods but if you have to leave in a hurry, packing all of your canned goods will get very heavy. So you'll need to have light items for easy packing if the need arises.
Buy food you know you will eat. Get potato flakes, dried milk, seasonings like salt, pepper, garlic and onion powders, lemon and lime juices in bulk. Baking soda, tin foil, cooking oil and various seasoning packets to make tacos, burritos, casseroles, etc. with your canned meats. Buy pasta and vacuum pack it. You can get a 'Food Savor' vacuum packer for around 140.00. Pinto beans and rice and other dried goods will need to be vacuum packed and stored in plastic bins but will also last a long time.
Buy vitamins, pain relievers, cold medicine, first aid supplies, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, bath soap, ladies' personal hygiene napkins, TP, shampoo, razors, laundry detergent, dish detergent.
If you have animals, stock up on food for them. If you don't have a well, buy water.
Buy candles, matches, flint, flashlights and batteries. Camping gear. Weapons, a HAM radio - if you can -
Things could get conceivably sooo bad, that you may be able to use your ample supply of food, etc. for trading or just to help out someone in need.
Schiff says in his book that wines, and other alcohol may well be good investments. If you're in the market for a house soon, as you mentioned, then you will make out - BIG! There will be lots of opportunities to bargain hunt and get great deals. Hubby and I are shopping around for an RV.
Get Schiff's book! Hope this helps.![]()
Send them to me, I'll hide them for you.
+1
Stock up on food and other necessities first.
Deb are you checking ebay for that RV? I've been watching it for about three months now. You can pick up a nice 10 to 15 y.o RV for under $10k.
Hubby is checking Craig's list I know for sure, but I don't know if he's looked at ebay. I'll ask him. Thanks for the tip.
yeah, I see them on and off, never had the urge to get one, but yes, it's a hell lot better than not having a house or a small car.
We have one that we use when we go down to patrol the border (we're minutmen) and we also use it to go to the desert ( my men like to ride quads) and we took it to the Grand Canyon one year. I like having one but the one we have is a very, very old Bounder. It's a 34ft one and has a washer and dryer even, but the bathroom is in the bedroom in the back of the RV which sucks when you're sleeping several people. The newer ones expand out and the bathrooms are in the middle of the RV.

I'm not a fan of safes.
A few years ago I had $4,000 cash and $14,000 of expensive plants in a heavy duty safe in my room. The safe was in the back corner of my closet. The safe was bolted to the floor boards and to 2x4s in the wall.
A thief entered my home with a crowbar, ripped the safe out, and stole the entire safe.
I personally would just hide the coins really well. Hide them in different places to minimize risk. Then get a good lock for your doors and a big dog.
