Silver AEs. Pretty happy. I figured this would get me on my way, after thinking about it for so long (about 2 years).

Now... where to hide it?

GReat time to get in - check local coin shops to for better deals and keep it up - Dont STOP!

Get a safe and a gun. I don't think you'll have to worry about gov't confiscation, but you will want to protect your valuables from possible home invaders.

A safe isn't nec until you have a significant amount just hide real well for now

I may get a safe eventually, but I figure I'll just be stashing them for now. Are there any good hiding places one can recommend or is this the kind of thing each person just comes up with on their own?

Well now, if we told you here on the internets, it wouldn't be so good anymore would it? :D

Just put them somewhere difficult/impossible to get to, and/or somewhere no one would look. NOT your sock drawer ;)

yea yea, i know :)

veering slightly to another topic, i see my coin purchases as just an extension of my cash emergency fund, though this would be for "real" emergencies. anyone have an opinion on how much of an emergency fund to maintain in real money (metals) ?

I'm not a fan of safes.

A few years ago I had $4,000 cash and $14,000 of expensive plants in a heavy duty safe in my room. The safe was in the back corner of my closet. The safe was bolted to the floor boards and to 2x4s in the wall.

A thief entered my home with a crowbar, ripped the safe out, and stole the entire safe.

I personally would just hide the coins really well. Hide them in different places to minimize risk. Then get a good lock for your doors and a big dog.

It's more of a percentage I guess, IMO. It depends how much you have in general. Also, I would keep an emergency fund of FRNs, in cash, just in case -- less than the coin, but keep some, at least enough to run for a couple weeks on, I'd say.

Also, have lots of extra non-perishable food in your cupboard. Dried beans and rice are cheap, and are extremely healthy -- a complete protein, right there.

paint

Get bricks of silver, stack them up against a wall and paint them. People will walk right by them.

Seriously, a safe makes a GREAT diversion. Get a small, used safe. You don't even need to know the combination. Make it small enough for a couple guys to muscle out of the house, but heavy enough to make it a BIG job. Put nothing in it but rocks, if you know the combo. Then hide your valuables elsewhere. And be ready because they will probably be so pissed when they get it open that they will come back and try to kill you.

On the other hand, if thieves get the drop on you, they will torture you to get the combination. So just give it to them. Of course if you don't KNOW the combination, things might go poorly for you.

because a little is better than nothing.

I guess it depends on what 'a little' is. In our case, we bought junk silver for trading purposes (if necessary) and gold for wealth protection. Others I know, who don't have a lot of money to begin with, are investing in their survival, i.e. food and supplies. If I didn't have much, I would do that first. If, however, I had enough to get food, supplies, and PMs, I think I would tend to get a significant amount, otherwise, what good is it really if you have to use what little you have to buy food and supplies that are going to cost you a helluva lot more in the future (assuming shtf), than they would now?

I don't have one, but I think something like this might work for small amounts:

LOL! Funny. Sort of.

We used to own an alarm and security camera business. We have a pretty sophisticated system, plus we have dogs and several weapons. Not to mention a safe that weighs about 400 lbs and it's hidden.

I couldn't agree more.

metals is only for AFTER you have food and water saved up, and debt free.

so you're a fan of junk silver eh? i figured i'd get some half dollars, quarters and dimes (well circulated) for general trading/purchasing. the fancy shiny silver and gold would be for wealth preservation.

sigh

the paradox of safety, the safest place is the first place they look (and the other way around)

yep, diversity is good.

haven't done the water/food thing yet, but we're debt free... just saving for a house (for once the housing crash wraps up)
