My grandma passed away a couple weeks ago. She was lifelong democrat but we talked politics often and actually came around to supporting Ron after seeing him in the debates. I suppose her priorities were probably not what a stereotypical 85 year olds are; she liked Ron because he wanted to bring the troops home, end the drug war, and his stance against racial profiling. I think a lot of older voters care about the same things we care about, they just have a harder time seeing thru the BS in the MSM.

I agree jkob. I'm a grandmother. My mother and my husband's father are great-grandparents, but all of us want to end the war, get the U.S. on more solid financial footing, downsize the bloated federal government and stop the assault on our liberties. Most don't use the internet and so do not understand the REAL alternative candidates and only hear how moderate and rational Romney is and how Santorum is big on family values. Why would they disagree with that as opposed to Obama the guy they are told is a Marxist. Day after day they hear Romney is the ONLY one who can accomplish it and so far the only bad thing they've heard about him is that Wall Street supports him. They perceive that as good because they think Wall Street is good.

Grandmothers and grandfathers are usually lonely and love to talk to young people. More than anyone you will ever meet THIS is the group who will listen to you IF you get THEM started talking first about Obama being such a disappointment and ask them WHY. This will give you lots of jumping points for thoughtful insight into Ron Paul's stances. It helps if you have lots of things you've printed out from the internet about how DANGEROUS the economic situation here is.

They either were children during the Great Depression or their parents or grandparents were. They will believe that it could happen again when some younger people will label you a kook for saying CNBC are stock cheerleaders.

I agree! My father is a big Ron Paul supporter and a senior. He brought a bunch of brochures down to his senior center last week. He gets very excited talking about Ron Paul to people. Some of the ladies unfortunately were making remarks about Ron Paul's appearence - he's so skinny, small, etc! But after the NH speech, 2 women came up to my father this week to say that they were now believing that Ron Paul is RIGHT about everything! The big issue is S.S. and we've got to make clear (which Paul did very well in his speech), that he's trying to protect it not end it.

My 82 year old grandma will be voting for the first time in her life this March. She will be voting for Ron Paul.

I converted my family in about 10 seconds. They don't care for politics, but will vote with me if I want them to.

It's almost always that easy. My friends have said "if you know enough and care enough to make me register to vote, I'll obviously just vote for who you say. You're into this shit and know what's up."

Many grandmas and grandpas are lonely and LOVE to talk. Get them started talking first and let them run off on the crookedness of politics, Obama's money spending & whatever and there are LOTS of articles you can have printed out in advance to hand out while you are saying..."You are so right, we are headed for ruin did you know that Ron Paul thinks ..."

When you get an insult to Ron Paul as a response, say "Oh I understand, I used to feel the same way, then I learned that..."

I think that some older seniors would be so happy to have a young person give them attention, that they might be more open than many would expect once they are given the facts. All they have now to guide them is network news, CNN, Fox Network and MSNBC. I think they at least deserve to have information PUT in their hands.

A WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL book which does not promote ANY candidate is How Do You Kill 11 Million People. It is only 48 pages long but the message is so powerful it will stay with you. YOu will have goosebumps when you read the last sentence. As you are reeling from the impact of that sentence the author says he will NOT endorse or put down any candidate but he urges people to vote and to do research. He does strongly hint that neither mainstream Republicans OR Democrats should be trusted and to not believe what you hear on television, but without telling anyone what to do URGES people to research.

I cannot think of a more respectful way to urge people to think for themselves than to get that book into their hands. And I don't know how anyone could read the book and NOT vote for Ron Paul.

If all young supporters convert their parents and grand parents to Ron Paul, then Dr.Paul will get the nomination for sure.
I think it should be easier and better to talk to your parents and grand parents then talking to a stranger..

Excellent idea! Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away two years ago. She was Huckabee's biggest fan, I think, although she was seriously overjoyed at the fact that I'd developed my own political identity instead of just voting for whomever she told me to.

As for my grandfather, I don't think I have a chance. The man is ninety-years-old and has never worked a private sector job in his life. He signed up for WW2 when he was eighteen and worked for the government ever since. However, he has never voted in his life. He says it's a waste of time, and he won't even talk politics. All he knows is that he hated Reagan.

All of my grandparents are dead.

My mother's parents would have never voted for Ron Paul or any Republican. They were hardcore 100% Yellow Dog Democrats. They grew up during the depression and saw all Republicans as the rich guys who allowed the stock market to collapse but Democrats were the farmers and workers who were the victims. My grandfather, bless his Yellow Dog heart, went to his grave convinced Nixon shot JFK and it was a Republican conspiracy against the Democrats.

Don't rule out seniors that you don't know. There are so MANY that have NOBODY. Your attention would be the greatest happiness in their lives. You might get trapped for six hours, but you might be the only person to have given that senior attention in months. That is why telemarketers prey on the elderly. They BUY garbage to get someone to listen to them talk.

But, besides on the phone, community senior centers and the Divisions for Aging in many states are DESPERATE for volunteers and speakers. You COULD help AND if the subject came up, which it usually would because many seniors love politics, they WOULD have opened the door.

I've volunteered to help Meals-on-Wheels before. It is a way to give to your community that means SO much to those you help. Sadly some of those people are not contacted or visited by their families for months at a time. The person that delivers their meals-on-wheels DOES as much of a service to these seniors by checking on them & giving them SOME human contact as they help by providing the only meal that senior will probably have for that day. I AM not saying to go in and deluge them with Ron Paul, but IF they complain about Obama or crooked politicians on their own, and they will, it would be appropriate to gently offer your views and offer to bring them information if they'd like.

I used to work in Public Relations for a state district of a Department of Aging (not where I live now) and during the 1990's the senior centers were very desperate for speakers. A sheriff offering to speak about liberty and how local law enforcement upholds our constitution would be a coveted and well received speaker who could introduce seniors who vote to the liberty message (Not Ron Paul just liberty and the constitution) but should ANYBODY ask who a good candidate that could be trusted to follow through...well the door would be opened. Where I worked and when I was in charge, I let people leave political literature in the Senior Centers because the seniors loved it. But, other people from other Divisions of Aging may not be so lax. Although every Senior Center is desperate for speakers like firemen talking about fire safety, physical therapists to demonstrate how to do mild exercise, artists to teach a painting class, or writers to talk about journaling...all of which would open doors to relationships which would give opportunities to discuss other subjects...(like the high cost of groceries, all the regulations just to get a backyard deck, the complexity of filing for taxes, the scariness of the rioting in Europe because socialism caused their monetary crash...all of which would lead to opportunities to ask if they'd want more information.)

My grandma is hip/cool/with it, but a lot of old people are out of it and worthless imo. They just leech off of the system like the boomer slobs. I respect the ones that get out their and make the most of their lives but I have no respect for the ones that just sit on their asses doing nothing but watching the idiot box all day. Espcially if they are able bodied.

I think a lot of older people who aren't really into politics are ending up confused about who to vote for because of the mixed signals they get from the media. A family member taking the time to really talk to them about the issues and show an interest in what they think would go a LONG way toward getting their vote. I know my mother (85) would vote for who I would suggest based on the fact that she knows I keep up with what is going on in politics and that she trust me more than the news media and she doesn't trust politicians and knows I would not sway her wrong or use her just to get a vote and would tell her the truth.
