The rest are linked to in the LibertyRider thread. I have a couple more I didn't use there, but I haven't gotten them onto photobucket just yet. But stay tuned to this bat-channel!

Howard Hughes offered him eight million for this collection, and Mr. Davis turned him down. Back when Hughes was alive, that was still some money, too!

I also want to give props to the curator and crew of the Davis. They were ready, willing and able to bend over backwards for LibertyRider Michael. They went above and beyond the scope of their jobs and their mission. Thanks, folks! Aloha!

I really want to visit that museum - on my list of things to do.

Thanks also for the freedom ride description.

Highly recommended. And if you have a significant other who hits you with the 'We're going to spend our vacation where looking at what?!' throw in Tsa-La-Gi in Tahlequah, the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Woolaroc in Barnsdahl, the Frank Lloyd Wright skyscraper Price Tower in Bartlesville, a float trip on the Illinois River, and maybe plan it at Easter when the dogwoods and azaleas are in bloom (and the weather is perfect).

Thanks also for the freedom ride description.

My pleasure!

One of the first businesses J.M. Davis set up was a hotel, which was handily located between the bus station and the train station. The lobby served as the showcase for his growing collection. They've recreated part of that lobby in a room of the museum.

I really tried with one or two shots to give you an idea of the scale of the place, but it won't fit in the little camera box at all. Michael and I had to drag ourselves out and get riding; it's awfully easy (even if you're not much of a gun nut) to spend the whole day there.

Michael spotted this one. Right behind the pretty Belgian pistol are a couple of samples of the world's first cartridge:

This is just one corner:

And I believe I promised you some Revolutionary War rifles:

Those particular old caplocks sure are easy on my eyes. How 'bout yours? It didn't surprise me that they had the one case in the place that allows you to admire from both sides.

As you can see, I took flash pictures (a tricky business with glass cases). I don't know what their normal policy is, but I obtained permission from the extraordinarily helpful curator Wayne before proceeding, and I promised to be very respectful of those things that could be affected by the intense light of the strobe. And I kept that promise, too--sorry about the pictures I didn't get as a result, but it couldn't be helped.

Enjoy!

I remember visiting that museum as a kid, was a cool visit.

Still remember my first time, too. I can spend all day there.

Oh, and those trying to talk spouses into agreeing to a heartland vacation, we also have a nice new acquarium in Jenks, and near each other in Tulsa are a very, very good zoo and an equally good air and space museum--search 'TASM'.

And the weather is nice in fall, too. The leaves have very good years; peak is about a week after Halloween.

Will anyone complain if I transfer over and blow up the photos from the other thread?
