AN OPEN LETTER TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

My fellow Americans, I sit here at 3:00 am with my heart racing and my hands shaking and I ask that you please take a moment to read my letter. I ask not that you read it for my sake, but rather for your own and for your children and grandchildren.

Go back another 30 years from then and study the sinking of the Lusitania (WW1).

Calculated, planned events with many, many players on both sides.

Those are questionable. Careful not too read too much into them. If you want something harder to explain away, follow our good doctor's advice and investigate the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. If the Lusitania and Pearl Harbor were just carelessness (most people, for example, really really did think Japan incapable of that attack), Tonkin was unquestionably a result of those two lessons learned and applied to serve Johnson's ends.

I'm pretty familiar with both. I'm more inclined to say that about the Lucitania. In both cases, there's strong indications that there was carelessness in hopes of the eventual outcome, if nothing else.

However, I'm also a strong believer in incompetence. I see evidence of it every day. And I know deep in my heart that we were having a field day throughout the twenties and thirties underestimating the hell out of the Japanese Empire.

Furthermore, we continued to underestimate the Japanese until Toyota surpassed Chrysler in U.S. sales. Saw that first hand. That's what racism will do for you.
