temper expectations in vt
I was out doing door to door yesterday. Being a Saturday a lot of people are out, but of the few I did meet in person (as opposed to just dropping literature) the best candidate for RP vote was a registered Dem who was going to vote in local elections.
I'm not sure why there is an expaction that VT should be a big RP state. I'm a semi-permament resident for over 10 years here and its a pretty odd ball state. Prior to Clinton I do not think it ever voted Dem. Then there was a large influx of retirees and vacationers from MA, CT, NY and even NJ. That was the shift to 'progressive' and 'liberal'. Of those that lean "R" Romney is their type of candidate. But there are some very heavily conservative pockets, especially in the North East Kingdom. Unfort. I think Santorum plays better to many of them. VT has a lot of guys in the Guard too.
Finally, you have to consider that a large portion, if not the majority, of the state is on welfare. So RP's message of reducing govt, liberty, independence etc does not play too well to those who rely heavily on the govt.
I'm told we need at least 20% to get a single delegate and that if one candidate gets 50%, they get all. I think the latter is unlikely and I do think RP can get over 20% (the only poll had him around 15%) but I'm not sure about a shocker. I think right now the more realistic expectation is fighting Santorum for the #2 spot and it would be a great achievement of the people on the ground here.
FYI, RP has a TV ad running and there are some radio ads too. The one radio spot I heard today ran on the area country station and I'll be honest, I think it was more likely to hurt then help as it kept focusing on Ron is for peace, not war, change foreign policy, military donations. If the target is Republicans who listen to country, not sure that is the angle to take. If it is hoping to get Dem cross over voting (open primary) is the country station the best audience? Not sure on that one. Romney ran a TV spot this afternoon during the hockey game.
The only signage I have seen in my area of the state has been RP. A neighbor who travels extensively on the western half of the state has made the same comment. But enthusiasm of grassroots does not always translate into big turnout. I think that is one thing that might play well to RP is I get the impression from speaking to locals, etc that there may not be a huge turnout to vote Tues.
Also want to say the local group in the Stowe area has done a really nice brochure. A few VT local points but I think it hits all the imporant themes without shouting at the voter. Its an easy read and flows well. If you are looking to do one for your still to vote state I would contact them on facebook and see if you can get a copy of the original source.
