Applying for Matching Funds forces the campaign to follow a bunch of stupid rules dictating things like how much money they are allowed to spend per state. If they don't need the funds it's stupid to do it.
I'd also like to point out that there are only about 90 employees at the moment in our 50 states. Each state having multiple districts, needing delegates, and having different rules on how to get the delegates.
Add in the human factor when people like us say we'll do something like be a delegate and then don't send the paperwork back, don't answer the phone or reply to emails, and in general blow off the campaign and you are getting an idea of what happened here in IL. Not to mention that we needed over 1500 signatures in several of our districts.
Would I like the campaign to be doing things faster? - yes. Would I like them to have a bigger staff since there are funds out there? - yes. But look at your meetup group, or any experience you have getting staff professionally and ask yourslef, how easy is it to find dedicated and trustworthy staff/volunteers that can work when and where you need them? From my experience it's friggin difficult.
We need to stop flying off the handle and do what the campaign asks us to do when they ask us to do it. People were bitching like crazy about the situation here in IL but in the end we filed successfully because MOST of us just worked our butts off.
We had some resistance going door to door here in my area but I guess some walmarts are willing to let you stand outside and gather sigs there if you ask ahead of time. Those places are packed with people and this is a huge shopping season. Make a sign that says Help Ron Paul get on the Ballot and stand next to the bell ringer for the salvation army
Good Luck Ohio!
