**OFFICIAL** Hockey Thread

I said "greatest of all". Not doubting Cam or Espo, but there are a very few names in the discussion of greatest ever, and only one wore a B at least IMO.

And LOL at Raycroft Jeb!

True, as a man and a player there are not many in his league.

Fucking ridiculous suspension for Raffi Torres. 25 games? Are you kidding me?! That hit warranted 2 min for interference, maybe adding another 2 min for charging (for it being slightly late and him leaving his feet) and maybe a 10 min misconduct. The suspension is basically: 10 games for hitting/hurting a star player, 7 games for being a marginal player and a hard hitter, 7 games because Hossa had to leave on a stretcher, and 1 game for the actual hit.

TORRES SUSPENDED 25 GAMES FOR LATE HIT TO HEAD ON HOSSA

NEW YORK -- The NHL has dropped the hammer on Raffi*Torres.

The league suspended the Phoenix Coyotes winger 25 games Saturday for his hit that injured Chicago Blackhawks forward Marian*Hossa.

The announcement was made hours before the Coyotes had a chance to eliminate Chicago in Game 5 of their first-round series.

Torres left his feet to hit an unsuspecting Hossa during Game 3 on Tuesday night, sending the Blackhawks winger smashing to the ice.

Hossa was taken off on a stretcher and hasn't appeared again in the series.

"Torres launched himself to deliver a late, direct hit to the head of Chicago forward Marian*Hossa," NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan said in a video statement. "After the puck is poked off Hossa's stick, he turns towards the middle of the ice. As Hossa turns to recover the loose puck ... it is clear (Torres) sees that Hossa is no longer in possession of the puck because Torres takes a one-handed swipe at it with his stick.

"Torres then leaps into the air and drives his left shoulder into Hossa's head. This is a violation of three NHL rules: interference, charging and illegal check to the head."

It's the third time Torres has been suspended by the NHL for a questionable hit in the last 13 months and Shanahan says that played a factor in the length of the ban.

"In addition to the fact that three separate NHL rules were violated by this one hit, two other factors were critical in determining the appropriate length of suspension," Shanahan said. "First, this violent and dangerous hit caused a severe injury.

"Second, Torres is not only a repeat offender as defined by the (collective bargaining agreement), his extensive supplemental discipline history consists mainly of acts very similar to this one, including two this season."

Torres' ban is the longest handed out by Shanahan, who suspended Columbus defenceman James* for 13 games (five pre-season, eight regular season) in September.

The suspension is the longest in the league since New York Islanders forward Chris Simon was handed a 30-game ban for stomping on the ankle of Jarrko Ruutu in December 2007. Simon also sat out 25 games in March 2007 for slashing Ryan Hollweg in the head.

Philadelphia Flyers forward Jesse Boulerice served a 25-game suspension after cross checking Ryan Kesler in the face back in October 2007.

(SO TORRES GETS THE SAME AS A GUY WHO SLASHED ANOTHER PLAYER IN THE FACE?!?)

Torres had a goal and an assist and averaged over 19 minutes of ice time for Phoenix in the first three games of the series

25 games that seems like a massive overreaction by the league. Yes, you got to protect players, but 25 games for a hit, come on.

It's because he hit a star player and that star player was injured. If Hossa had been a 3rd liner and not taken off on a stretcher there would have been NO suspension. Torres didn't even get a minor penalty during the game.

And if Torres was Malkin or Crosby it would have been 1 or 2 games maximum. The fact that he's a hard hitting grinder with a history of hard hits (many of which didn't warrant supplemental discipline, although 1 or 2 did) is why he got such a big suspension.

I just think its absolutely ridiculous that he got the same amount of games (more if you count playoff games as more important) than a guy who slashed another player in the face (Chris Simon) and a player who cross checked another player in the face (Boulerice). Torres basically got the same suspension as Marty McSorely!

He is a repeat offender. So they trying to make an example out of him.

Obviously. But a lot of his suspensions have been bullshit. His hit on Eberle's head was completely Eberle's fault, he put himself in a vulnerable position knowing he was about to be hit. The suspension for his hit in 2007 against a Calgary Flame (can't remember who) was ridiculous as well, it was shoulder to shoulder, but the guy put his head into Torres after the hit already started.

Shanahan is a fucking idiot and should be fired.

Hey Jeb, the NHL is doing the exact same thing as you were with the Bert/Moore incident. Punish actions, NOT outcomes.

Bertuzzi's actions warranted at least 20 games, regardless of outcome. Torres didn't warrant any suspension based on his action, IMO.

Berts actions warranted a game misconduct, and 1-3 games off at most. If Moore had gotten up afterwards that's all he would have gotten. In the May sucker of Kimmy I posted May got three games, no way Bert would have gotten more.

Not going to go into this again. Let's agree to disagree.

He's 19. He's fine.

This is coming from a Leafs fan (lol :(). Seriously, he's a teenager.

Iv been so disappointed by Tyler Seguin's performances. He has had so many chances and he has been unable to finish. Put the same chances on the stick of Bergeron or Krejci and you got goals.

Tyler really needs to step up his game.

There is no way we should have lost last night to the caps.

Every game he has had more than 3 chances and he has blow um. 0 Points in the first 5 games. Regular season he was the leading goal scorer, We cannot advance without him stepping up.

Reg Season =/= playoffs. Completely different animal. Let him mature, he'll be around for a long time...
