Cruz knocks Dole, McCain, Romney, praises Ron Paul

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), the first speaker at this year’s CPAC, urged Republicans to run campaigns on true conservative principles and suggested some recent GOP presidential candidates weren’t up to the task.

“We all remember President Dole, President McCain and President Romney,” Cruz said. He praised the trio as “good men” but said conservatives lose when they don’t stand by their principles.

Cruz then turned to wooing the youth vote, saying Republicans should focus on conservativism rather than identity politics and moderation.

“Who are the Republicans who have most energized young people? Ronald Reagan and Ron Paul,” Cruz said. “But when you think of them, neither of them were rugged, James Dean types. They were septuagenarians.

“Young people came out by the millions and said, ‘That’s the vision I want to be a part of.'”

Any word on how our chances are at the straw poll? How many Rand people are there?

I think one of the great things about Rand is that "Rand people" can now be anyone since he's been able to get good old republicans to support him.

Sen. Tom Coburn (R) holds a gun given to him by Minority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell during the American Conservative Union Conference on March 6, 2014 in National Harbor, Maryland.

Anyone know how good the YAL/SFL/liberty crowd is? Does Rand have a chance of winning the straw poll or will it be Cruz or Christie?

Well if youtube views has anything to do with it. Christie had like 6 views or something like that to Cruz's 5k or so.

My friend, I am posting this live from CPAC, and I fully expect us to win the straw vote. We have a LOT of libertarians at the conference. I won't say anything crazy like its a guarantee, but I would be surprised if we did not win.

That being said, every person with a Rand Paul sticker/shirt/etc on that I come across, I make sure they've voted in the poll. We have a bunch more libertarians coming in for just tomorrow for Rand's speech, we'll make sure they vote!

YAL's booth was the busiest of any in the CPAC Hub and it was not close, at least from what I could see.

Nice!!

What an impressive line up of conservatives! John Bolton! Plus a zillion legislators that vote for tyranny on a daily basis! And governors that line up to their feeding trough! I'm swelling with pride!

So does this mean that Sarah Palin is the "headliner" speaker since she has the final slot?

Why are the last speeches for each day in the mid-afternoon?

Why do I feel like I am watching some kind of fascist convention when I listen to these CPAC speakers? Most of them them talk about small government but then shamelessly pine with reverence and idolatry for the state collective, wrapping themselves in the stars and stripes for all to see. Ted Cruz's speech reminded me of many of Hitler's recurring talking points, i.e. "The current government is bad!" "Unite all you like-minded citizens in the sacred quest to return our nation to exalted greatness!" "We shall overcome!" "We will purge the corrupt bureaucrats!" Your labor is your salvation!" The bureaucrats have failed you!" blah blah blah

Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.
