Official Campaign Response

I wish they would be a little more convincing. This is not going away, I fear. :(

It had been debunked and stories have been retracted. Several times. It won't go away because some dirtbag will drag it up again.
There is nothing of substance that they can use against the Message or Ron Paul, so they resort to this dishonest crap.
We should get someone else to trash the TNR authors credibility...

What Credibility?

Im thinking from the Reason article that RP may not have read the TNR aritcle. If I were Ron Paul, I would have come back with a few specifics. i.e.: ' I was a minority stockholder in a newsletter that I lent my name to, however, that was the extent of my involvement in it. Personally, I am bothered that this article would have gotten published on The New Republic - did they not do research to see that this information has already been debunked, and that it is very old news, or are they specifically trying to damage my campaign? '

Sigh of relief!

Actually, this makes me feel quite a bit better. I wish he had checked out what was happening in his name back then, but nothing can be done about that now. The point is, these were never Ron Paul's views. He is not a racist or a homophobe. Period. End of issue.

I am a little fuzzy about this, but does anyone remember when Buchannan was running and won NH and then all of a sudden they released that picture of him looking like a crazy with a gun, putting it in commercials and smearing him in the media and then everyone put all their money behind Dole when they knew he couldn't win?? They would rather have a democrat than a true conservative.

This is an old tactic, but it always works well. Quite honestly I feel sick to my stomach.

It has occurred to me that if you really want to know the truth of the story, consider the fact that Ron Paul doesn't even monitor his own Presidential campaign. The grassroots support have been the backbone all along, and we've done everything without his permission - for better or worse. Seems to me that the Ron Paul we support today is the same guy he was twenty years ago. I've never met Ron Paul, but I can't even imagine him saying the things in those newsletters even as a joke.

It is funny that you mention this. When Buchanan ran for President I didn't give a damn about politics and didn't follow the race, but the only thing I can remember from that race is that "Pat Buchanan is a racist". It wasn't until the past year or so that I have started noticing him on cable news. I remeber the first time I actually listened to him - I actually had to stop and wonder where I had picked up this "racist" bullshit. It is amazing how well that tactic works.

I think the damage is already done. Just like when Kerry was "swiftboated", whether it was true or not didn't even matter to the sheep population.

I don't think Dr. Paul is a racist, but this really, really bothers me. I mean, didn't he receive a copy of his own newsletter??? He sounds like he was completely oblivious to it all. I don't get how this could have happened. I'd really want to see a long, detailed explanation from Dr. Paul. I'm a big supporter, have donated hundreds of dollars to his campaign, convinced others to vote for him, but I do not find the press release adequate and acceptable.

He had pretty much given up on politics at the time, having said on the floor of congress that things had changed to the point that an honest man couldn't be found in Washington. It was only with the Republican sweep into congress in '94 that he thought about running again. I could very well imagine that he didn't pay attention to the newsletter.
