Obama signs (Executive) order to raise minimum wage for federal contractors

(Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama signed an executive order on Wednesday to raise the minimum wage for federal contract workers to $10.10 an hour starting next year and encouraged employers nationwide to increase wages for their workers.

Obama announced during his State of the Union address last month that he intended to take executive action to raise wages for federal contract workers.

The order will affect workers starting on January 1, 2015, and applies to new contracts and replacements for expiring contracts.

Obama, who has also pressed Congress to enact legislation to raise the minimum wage for all workers nationwide, urged business leaders and government officials to do more to increase workers' incomes.

"I would ask any business leader out there, any governor, any mayor, any local leader listening: do what you can to raise your employees' wages," he said, rejecting arguments that doing so would hamper the economy.

"It's not going to depress the economy, it'll boost the economy," he said.

What the order does is requires any government contractors to pay all employes covered by that contract at least the new Federal Minimum Wage. It applies to all contracts signed in 2015 or later. These employees are paid directly by the contractor- not the US government though the wage costs are part of the contract amount so they do indirectly pay the wages.

I think your 2% figure is correct- the estimated number of those who may eventually be paid more is about 200,000. These would be for example private companies contracted out to provide food service or cleaning or laundry for a government group or say military base.

A $2 increase for 200,000 people would cost about $800 million a year.

If he Nationalized all the fast food joints, they would become Federal Employees- not contractors- and would not be covered by the Executive Order. But companies like Pizza Hut and McDonalds are contractors- they provide food services at some military bases. And again, it would not be all Pizza Hut employees covered by the order if they successfully bid on a project- only those workers involved with the specific project covered by the bid.
