Obama Signs Belarus Sanctions; Calls Belarus President a "Dictator"

Belarus is an interesting country. I went there in 2007. My advice: of you're going to visit, dont take the overnight train from Moscow in 3rd class. Unless of course your idea of a bed is sharing a wooden bench with 3 other people.

One of the more onerous sanctions (likely unintentionally so) instructs the government of the United States to, "continue to work closely with the European Union and other countries and international organizations, to promote the conditions necessary for the integration of Belarus into the European family of democracies....

He's doing the banker's work finding new rubes to pay back the EU's enormous debt. swHillary called the Hungarians fascists for their sovereign stance and flat tax. Can't have that now, must have debt backed money at all costs. the PTB at work.

He should look in the mirror.

oh my gosh, guys. read the bill!!! good lord!

considering SOPA..this is just cherry!!

edit:

i can't stop laughing at the horror!!

That is insane...How people fail to become insulted and angered by the hypocrisy of the administration acting in the name of our country escapes me. Great speech by Dr.Paul. No wonder they want him out of Washington. Oh emperor you have no clothes!

This is simply ridiculous! The last thing people in Belarus need is sanctions. Lukashenko is a dictator. Basically the last Soviet style authoritarian. The country itself has always been horribly managed. Even in Minsk some of the apartment buildings don't have running water, and they just recently had their currency hyperinflate due to his bad economic policy, people were terrified. My mother in law was saying that it was all over the news in Ukraine (my wife is from western Ukraine), and the Ukrainians were really worried about it. Bad move Obama, bad move

My wife is from Ukraine (next to Belarus) as well. I was just there last summer when the Timoshenko imprisonment rallies were going on. Yes Ukraine is going the same route. Horribly mismanaged and lack of rule of law has kept capital far away. Such a shame. The best we can do is to keep trade as open as possible to help the middle class in these countries. Dictators have a hard time staying in power with a strong middle class.

When you look at such corrupt countries you have to understand that the corruption started from the top and can only be corrected top down (so once a dictator is in place it can not be stopped short of revolution). If you get pulled over in Ukraine you pay your ticket to the cop right there. (The more you pay the less they will hassle you).

It’s funny how she is not very political but does see what is going on here. And she does not understand how US citizens can so easily give up their freedoms for such small inconsequential reasons.

Belarus' President is a Dictator.

But please Obama, stay the fuck out of European affairs. Sanctioning a trading partner of an already weakened EU is just another nail in the coffin.

It's so hypocritical when Obama is calling some leaders "Dictators" and putting sanctions on them, while simultaneously giving foreign aid to other dictators.

Very good national hockey team. The "dictator" actually practices with them, and would probably order himself to play the games with them except for threat of assassination (& they'd lose to Canada 11-1 instead of 7-2).

loo, they suck. Canada destroys them. Canada destroys everyone though.

At least Ukraine was smart enough a few years ago to lift visa restrictions for American tourists. I think the amount of new construction at Borispol shows that it is helping a little bit. But their amount of government regulation and corruption makes it basically impossible to have any real capital come into the country. I also contend that it forces young educated Ukrainians to leave the country to set up businesses in the rest of Europe cause they don't want to deal with Ukrainian bureaucracy either.

But on the Belarus sanctions. I think this is a perfect example of why Dr. Paul is correct in his views. Lukashenko commits all of this evil against his people, so sanctions are imposed. Who does that hurt? The people. Lukashenko couldn't care less!. Will this affect his life in any way? The people already hate him, it's not like having an even harder time importing goods will help the country. It's just idiocy.
