He goes on to say that there is a "distorted" view of Muslims in America due to risky rhetoric and that extremists should not be "legitimized" with rhetoric that calls them Muslims.
The views are split according to political affiliation, with 70 percent of Democrats favoring caution compared to 29 percent of Republicans, while 65 percent of Republicans think the next president should talk bluntly about Islamic extremism.
He also lauded the Muslim leaders for "consistently condemning terrorism" and said that their ideas should be "amplified" more across the globe. "I don't know", Trump said in 2011 on Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor". "No, it's true. Look it up".
While at the Islamic Society of Baltimore, the President highlighted the long-standing history of Muslims in America and criticized Republican presidential candidates for their anti-Muslim bigotry.
"This is not a new thing", he added, "generations of Muslim Americans helped to build our nation".
Ibrahim Hooper, the group's spokesman, said harassment and bullying is also on the rise.
"I refuse to give them legitimacy".
Making light of politically charged assertions that he is a Muslim, Obama, a Christian, said that founding father Thomas Jefferson was also accused of being a Muslim.
