NYT article on our man, Ron Paul

Hi All,

I think the second half of that times article brings up a good point. The campaign is going to have to deal with the issue of the "fringe" problem. Mainstream voters won't want to be associated with the John Birch Society or people who believe that 9/11 was an inside job.

For what its worth, I consider myself a mainstream democrat, I don't want to be associated with those people either. Frankly, their involvement in the campaign gives me second though for how much money or time I want to contribute.

Best,

James

Ron Paul being against the war is, by definition, "fringe" in the Republican Party. That pretty makes all of us "fringe" here on this forum.

Fringe: members of a group or organization who hold views not representative of the group and usually more extreme the radical fringe of a political party

Please speak for yourself.

libertyeagle, did you read the first two words you quoted of mine? they said "I think" = MY opinion. i wasn't talking for everyone. and i was being very general. "i think" your comment was totally unneccesary.

The most atrocious thing about this article is:

"Ron Paul will not be the next president of the United States"

I bet this New York boy said the same thing about the Yankees who were
up 3 - 0 against the Red Sox in the AL championship. Funny thing is that the
Red Sox won 4 - 3 and handed the Yankees what I believe is their a$$es. They then went on to win the World Series! A little bit of hope and a little bit of courage goes a long way.

"One man with courage is a majority" - Andrew Jackson. Become a
delegate in order to get Ron Paul the GOP nomination!

Amen.

I agree. And I think the negative comments being brought up about the nature of other Ron Paul's supporters speak more about the people making it an issue than it does about Ron Paul's message.

This bears repeating:

I find it ironic that people want to assert control over the message of freedom.

Control freaks are exactly the reason why we lose our freedoms.

It requires some bravery and tolerance to accept that people will approach things differently and do things in ways that you or I may not always approve of...

A spontaneous and non-centralized revolution against the status quo is happening here, let's end the attacks on the diversity of our movement.

The only thing we need to have in common is the value of liberty and freedom.

I don't care if you believe in green little men from Mars or practice poor calligraphy, I will embrace you as a brother and sister of liberty.

If we, as a movement, can't accept and revel in our diversity; we may not have the strength and intestinal fortitude to be free.

Actually, Paul's libertarianism is not radical at all and some in the Libertarian Party disagree with his stances on stopping illegal immigration, to the point of building a fence, in addition to his strong stance against abortion.

This was a total hitpiece and attempted to malign Dr. Paul in about every way possible.

Oh well, we can expect many more to come as Dr. Paul's numbers increase. We're not going to change the mainstream media, but WHAT WE CAN DO is buck up and decide we're not going to let them have their way with people's minds and attitudes. That means WE have to take the lead in getting the truth about Dr. Paul and his stances and principles out to the public. Last time I checked, a full page ad in the NY Times was a bit beyond our budget, but WE CAN make sure nearly every American has received campaign literature. Can't we?

Let's not let them have their way.

I actually thought the article was fairly broad in it's coverage and the author was good enough to acknowledge that RP is not a conspiracy theorist but that fringe groups tend to gravitate towards him anyway. Regardless of how you view the piece, however, if it gets enough readers, there WILL be more RP supporters coming out of it.

They paint him as out of touch with today and of course the conclusion gets into the fringe group type stuff. At face value it doesn't sound bad to us but to your average american that has never heard of him it will. People we must use our heads. Put all agendas aside he is not to be USED to push your own personal agendas. Focus on one thing promoting ron paul, letting him do the talking for himself, with the ultimate goal of Ron Paul being elected. After he gets elected you can go back to promoting your personal agenda's and will have more freedom to do so under a Ron Paul administration. I'm just really sick and tired of seeing everybody using this whole movement to help promote their own agenda's just disgusting.

Very well put!

I consider myself open-minded but even I was shocked at the various agendas at my last meet-up. Personally I don't mind, thats why I am fighting for Dr. Paul. Everyone deserves to be heard and free to express themselves. However people should stick to helping with the election and network for other causes on the side.

We might not want to just post this everwhere possible...its intellectual property after all, and for more practical reasons you may not want to.

I thought I'd never suggest this, but everyone should go out and buy a copy of the NYT Magazine this weekend (I think its the NYT Magazine and not the NYT). Once the (even liberal) MSM gets wind that RP stories sell newspapers and magazines and adverting, they will do more.

I would argue that this passage is the single most politically valuable portion of the whole piece:

Paul survived these revelations. He later explained that he had not written the passages himself — quite believably, since the style diverges widely from his own. But his response to the accusations was not transparent. When Morris called on him to release the rest of his newsletters, he would not. He remains touchy about it. “Even the fact that you’re asking this question infers, ‘Oh, you’re an anti-Semite,’ ” he told me in June. Actually, it doesn’t. Paul was in Congress when Israel bombed Iraq’s Osirak nuclear plant in 1981 and — unlike the United Nations and the Reagan administration — defended its right to do so. He says Saudi Arabia has an influence on Washington equal to Israel’s. His votes against support for Israel follow quite naturally from his opposition to all foreign aid. There is no sign that they reflect any special animus against the Jewish state.

Having that in the NYT is pure gold.

me too, but it seems credible. I clicked through some links which lead to something that said it was off the nyt website but I can't find it.

Sometimes articles get "floated" or just leaked...this may be a way to get a feel for how something may be received.

I see it as a balanced piece...not entirely pro-Ron Paul but I don't believe a fair article needs to be. Balance is good.

I like the article, although, I would rather not have it say, "He won't be elected" I think the republican race is up for anything right now. We'll see what I make happen!

I want to thank the people who've responded to my earlier comments about the 9/11 "Truthers" and the John Birch Society.

The reality is that in order to win, we need to convince main stream republicans and mainstream democrats that RP is the best candidate. We also need to face up to the reality that MOST people in America view the 9/11 "Truth" movement and the John Birch Society as fringe. Its going to be harder to get Ron Paul elected if the mainstream outfits like the NY times publicize this connection. I can't emphatically emphasize this enough.

Best,

James H

"He won't be elected" is not a factual statement but a opinion. Is this an editorial? If not, perhaps we should let the editors know that americans still expect the highest standards of journalism from one of our most renown newspapers.
