NY public school to serve only vegetarian meals

I once saw packaged meat at a university that was labeled "fit for human consumption". That scared the appetite out of me.

All those veggies will be GMO laced poison for sure. :)

Simpson's had "meat flavored meat" for lunch one day.

Was just going to speak about the Blue Zones. ;)

Here is the basic diet of the people of Sardinia. Italy, who are Number 1 in the Blue Zones:

"Rock lobster, scampi, bottarga, squid, tuna, sardines and other seafood figure in Sardinian cuisine, though meat, dairy products, grains and vegetables constitute the most basic elements of the traditional diet.

Suckling pig and wild boar are roasted on the spit or boiled in stews of beans and vegetables, thickened with bread. Herbs such as mint and myrtle are used. Much Sardinian bread is made dry, which keeps longer than high-moisture breads. Those are baked as well, including civraxiu, coccoi pinatus, a highly decorative bread and pistoccu made with flour and water only, originally meant for herders, but often served at home with tomatoes, basil, oregano, garlic and a strong cheese.

Sardinia boasts the highest consumption of beer per capita in Italy, 60 liters per person per year, almost double the national average. The Province of Nuoro has the highest consumption with an average of 100 liters per capita. The discovery of jars containing hops, in some archeological archaeological sites, evidence that beer was produced since the copper age."

Fact is about this new school lunch policy is there is more than one factor than just what you eat that leads to longevity and health.

So a bunch of school kids are now forced to consume only veggies at lunch. So who cares when their home lives are stressed they have few constructive social connections and don't exercise. Band aid on a ruptured artery.

Once I was old enough to make the connection, I never ate the disgusting school lunches ever again.

I don't eat meat, sweets, soda, trans-fats. Guns are bad. All hail the king of NYC, he is A#1.

It may actually be a good idea because I never ate a piece of meat with school lunch that I considered edible.

Science was in reference to the creationism vs evolutionism that was being talked about a week or two ago. It was sarcasm on my part. I believe in micro-evolution but that we were initially created by a higher being.....I don't mean to derail the thread.

Hey, what's a little sarcastic thread derail among friends? :)

Too simplistic to say it's meat or veggies. Read the Book "The Blue Zones". Most of these people have some form of meat protein in their diets and live longer than anyone else on earth.

I never said anything that simplistic. I said vegetarians tend to live longer, but I added the disclaimer that paleos might do better but there isn't enough research. The average processed meat eater is at the bottom of the health totem pole. As for your "Blue Zones" book, the author doesn't seem to put the same emphasis on diet that you appear to be.

Dan Buettner: Staying young and living long is mostly a function of your environment... and the good news is that to a great extent, we each have control over that environment. In the Blue Zones around the world, people live in places where walking is the main means of transportation, where the sun shines strong all year long so they get enough vitamin D; where they have established social norms that bring people together in supportive groups or clubs. The Blue Zones book shows you how to take about two hours and set up your home, your social life and your work place to help you get up to 10 more good years out of life (and look younger along the way!).

Yes. If you live in a rural area and get plenty of sunshine and fresh air and clean water and rest that goes a long way to promoting health as well as a simple diet.

I dated a vegan once. She tried to get me to eat Soy Bacon. They're still looking for her body.

“This is so good!” squealed 9-year-old Marian Satti, devouring her black bean and cheddar cheese quesadilla Tuesday at lunch. “I’m enjoying that it didn’t have a lot of salt in it.

Looks like the public school system in NYC is doing a great job.

Salt: It's meat in crystal form!

I wouldn't feed school lunch meat to a dog, let alone a child. This is probably for the best. They should also add nuts and whole grains to the menu. The parents should be packing food for their kids to take anyway, especially if the kid wants meat for breakfast/lunch.

I don't see a problem with this.

I have always wondered if airborne yeast gets in our stomachs when we eat, and if airborne yeast dies from stomach acid. If so then it is a fail for vegetarians.

Yeah, this sounds like something a 9-year-old would say....

I disagree, I think vegetarianism is potentially much healthier than the Standard American Diet of eating animals that eat grains all day, then loading up on grains and sugar.

That said, I'm philisophically paleo, so I eat A LOT of meat.. But I almost never buy any meat at the grocery store, I'd probably go back to being vegetarian again over eating meat that was sitting in a carafe it's whole life. You are getting a lot less unhealthful grains if you are eating rice and veggies than if you are eating an animal that ate nothing but GMO corn and soy its whole life.

I am guessing these kids will come out healthier, in this case they probably did improve their diet because you know the meat they were serving before is the worst meat you can buy.

Unfortunately I am sure all the veggies they get will be irradiated or GMO. Schools ALWAYS get the lowest grades of food to be serve to the children. Even when they served meat in schools it was more like a meat-like substance. Not even 100% meat, mostly fillers.
