Ron Paul's 'Big Dog' Ad One Of GOP Race's Coolest Commercials
December 5, 2011
by Frank James

Rep. Ron Paul may not be leading in any of the major presidential polls (though he's in second place in Iowa according to a recent poll.) But he arguably is setting the pace when it comes to the 2012 presidential campaign ads.

After unleashing a fiery anti-Newt Gingrich ad in which he accused the former House speaker of "serial hypocrisy," Paul on Monday went up with a catchy new ad in Iowa in which he portrays himself as the real budget cutter and consistent conservative.

A blend of live video and animation set off by headbanger rock guitar, the ad starts with visuals of a rottweiler and lap dog. A narrator says:

"What's up with these sorry politicians? Lots of bark but when it's showtime, wimpering like little shih tzus. You want big cuts. Ron Paul has been screaming it for years.

The commercial then drives home its point that Paul proposes ending the Education, Commerce, Interior, Energy and HUD departments by making them disappear in puffs of dark smoke.

The kicker? "That how Ron Paul rolls."

OK, maybe the ad's hipness clashes somewhat with a candidate who often comes across like the old guy around the corner who shouts at the neighborhood kids to keep off his grass. But the "big dog" ad is still best of breed so far.

If NPR likes it ..... We are Winnin this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dr. Ron Paul the next President of the United States !!!!!!!!

That ad (and I'm certainly not surprised NPR doesn't mention it) works for one reason and one reason only--some brilliant person put in, very near the end, the phrase, 'Wanna drain the swamp?'

Perfection was achieved right there.

That was the silliest political commercial I have ever seen. The only thing missing was instead of the 18 wheeler at the end, it should have been the Coors Light Bullet Train. Oh, and somehow work in Keith Stone. He’s really smooth! I actually had some respect for Mr. Paul... Poof! Just like that. Gone.

Uh oh guys, we're losing the "respect" of the NPR listening crowd. Better pack it in.

drain the swamp? When I first heard that I laughed out loud. It's a good ad, you can't help but smile.

Agreed. If they really had respect for Paul, it was because they understood the need to drain the swamp. So, obvious troll is obvious. Cry me a river.

This ad is beyond genius. The truck rolling at the end is going to be picked up on by people in Iowa instantly. The Iowa Hawkeye football team has an intro video that uses a tractor trailer running over the opposing teams mascot, with air horn blaring with a hard guitar riff underlay. For all those Hawkeye fans out there this will resonate instantly. The only thing the campaign could do to top this for Hawkeye fans is to have Ron lead the team out onto the field dressed as Herky. Most Iowans love NCAA wrestling, football, MMA, big industrial machinery and the band ACDC. This is a perfect ad.

I am going to make myself a yard sign now.

RON PAUL 2012

Drain the Swamp!

I also love how when the narrator says "want big cuts?" in a tough guy tone, it kind of sounds like he's saying "want big guts?"

That is a good slogan..."Drain the swamp". Really good.

For the younger crowd, that is the genius with the ad because 'Drain the (alligators out of the) Swamp was Ronald Reagan's line.. before he got elected.
