No To Fractional Gold Eagles? Why?

I have always heard that the consensus is not to buy fractional amounts (ie. 1/2oz, 1/4 etc.) when buying American Gold Eagles-only buy 1oz AEG. WHY is that? I'm new to buying gold and so far I've only bought 1oz coins. I think it's safe to say I'm not the only newbie wondering this. Opinions?
Thanks in advance:)

Hmm, maybe because the premium is a lot higher? That'll be my guess. I'd be interested too.

I don't see why not. The only issue I can think of is that you pay an additional premium for fractions, so if you can afford full ounces it would make more sense financially. You can always buy silver if you're looking for smaller units of value.

Nothing wrong with fractionals per se. It's just a question of value. Fractionals carry very large premiums.

ya, if you can get a good price (relative small premiums compared to that of a 1oz), there's nothing wrong with fractional gold. however i think a lot of people buy coins like british sovereigns for fractional gold because they are very recognizable worldwide... i think they have 0.23 oz of gold in them... so almost a quarter ounce....(might want to double check that)... a lot of people think they're nicer than modern day gold bullion because people like these older coins. obviously you gotta be careful not to get ripped off... so know how much gold is the coins you're buying and do the math to see if it's a good price (obviously don't buy from goldline)... buy it from a reputable dealer.

If you are buying gold to preserve the value of your savings you get more bang for your buck buying 1 oz rounds. If you are buying gold for barter then fractionals make sense.

If 1oz gold is more than you can invest in at a given time I would go with silver instead, or save up for the gold. Granted, the way gold is going now the longer you save the longer you'll need to save...
