Jersey City Police Chief
Takes Aim at NRA

ARUN KRISTIAN DAS
MYFOXNY.COM - Jersey City's top cop angrily denounced the influx of illegal guns onto the streets of the city and even took rhetorical aim at the National Rifle Association after an early-morning shootout left five cops wounded, two critically.

"We need help to stop these weapons from hitting the street," said Police Chief Thomas Comey. "This weapon is manufactured for nothing other than to hunt man."

Police Chief Thomas Comey was angry that a suspect who had a prior weapons conviction had no trouble obtaining the Mossberg pump-action tactical shotgun.

The suspect, Hassan Shakur, used the shotgun loaded with buckshot and slugs to shoot at Jersey City and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey cops.

Officers returned fire, killing Shakur and an apparent accomplice, Amanda Anderson.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon, Comey said he considers that type of shotgun an "assault weapon" that should be used by law enforcement and no one else. He said that authorities traced the gun's serial number and were reasonably certain that at some point the weapon was purchased legally in the South.

"We should stop being afraid of the NRA and start being afraid [for] our own rights," Comey said.

The NRA could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Well he is right....

If he tries to take away my pump action shotgun he will be assaulted....:D

NJ? Doesn't surprise me. I know more about the guns the cops their carry than they do themselves.

The ignorance possessed, increasingly, by cops in general is almost ludicrous, but scary instead.

So he thinks weapons manufactured for nothing other than to hunt man are only to be used by law enforcement. Wouldn't that mean he expects everybody else to be a subject while law enforcement rules over them? A pistol is also made as a defensive weapon. I suppose in his viewpoint, only law enforcement should have them as well.

He still has a lot to learn about self defense I guess.

How fast can you shoot and load and AIM accurately with a pump action weapon? If you're behind a shelter with a semiauto 9mm pistol and a shotgun round is fired wouldn't you have a superior advantage? You would be able to come out firing and unloading a magazine clip at the guy because you know he'll be in the middle of a reload as you come at him.

SWAT (Original Name) - Special Weapons Attack Team

They changed the name to fool you, now it can't be hidden anymore: SWAT = Special Weapons Attack Team.

The Los Angeles Police Department is generally credited with developing the concept of SWAT in the 1960s. Political and social turmoil in the United States during that decade led police to decide that they were unequipped to deal with certain violent situations. The Watts Riots in 1965 and the 1966 sniper attack at the University of Texas in Austin reinforced the fact that they needed special equipment and procedures. Daryl Gates, a high-ranking LAPD officer who eventually became police chief, is often mistakenly credited with coming up with the idea of adopting military weapons and tactics for police units. However, Gates did use his position within the force to promote the idea of a SWAT team.

Initially, the SWAT unit was viewed with great skepticism by police officials, politicians and even other officers. The original acronym, "Special Weapons Attack Team," was viewed as too antagonistic, so Gates changed it to "Special Weapons and Tactics." Two incidents cemented the SWAT team's place within the modern police force: a barricade stand-off with members of the radical militant Black Panther Party in 1969, and a similar situation with the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1974. The next year, a network television series called "S.W.A.T." further embedded the idea of a SWAT team into American consciousness. Police units using paramilitary tactics quickly spread across the country, first through major cities with violent gangs, then filtering down to smaller cities.

Yeah, yeah. What do you expect?

I mean, 'assault weapon' is pretty much redundant anyway. I suppose you could say 'defense weapon', and they do (to talk about their own), but a weapon is a weapon and only the hand that wields it can decide which 'category' it will find itself in...

Silly semantics with an agenda. Again.

"We should stop being afraid of the NRA and start being afraid [for] our own rights," Comey said.

That's the kind of stuff that you just can't make up. The irony is astounding.

thats funny. Thats exactly what a cop told me to get in FL, after having a botched break in at my apt complex. He told me that the pumping sound was a "warning" and usually would scare anyone with half a brain away if they heard that to GTFO.

Police officers in NJ are high school dropouts and retards, who wouldn't have jobs if it weren't for nepotism.

If it weren't for the police and their expert training, people would be shooting themselves all around the country. Good thing it was only a Glock 40 and not a 12 guage shotgun:
