NH-Keene suing Free Staters for feeding parking meters, "harrassing" meter maids.

This isn't Keene-specific... it's so weird to see something people do all the time get national attention.

There are businesses here that will feed meters on your behalf, there are a lot of people that drive around the hospital feeding meters (ffs what kind of evil SOB put up meters with a 2 hour limit around a hospital?!?), there are some smaller businesses that keep no tip jar but do have a jar for change to feed the meters, and in a few clever instances I've seen some downtown businesses have an off-downtown lot (free) and a little cart that takes you to the restaurant, etc.. You get to see the city at night and grab a little air, you don't have to walk those stupid streets/sidewalks in heels, and you get free parking.

There are solutions to this. Most of them are never really seen or appreciated by anyone and that's the real point of doing good. The cops don't seem to agree in this instance, which is weird, because I haven't seen that kind of backlash anywhere else. Maybe there is and it's just not as publicized?

So, basically they are being sued for giving the city of Keen money?

It's very telling. What the city is saying is that IF everyone were to actually obey the law and paid meter fees as required, the city STILL wouldn't be able to collect enough revenue, because they consider this to be causing a LOSS.

Keene's officials are ****ing up because they are saying they have to have people break the law or else the operation can't sustain itself. Ironic for a government which is supposed to keep order. I'd be making that case if I were one of those folks.

I really wish they had done this all with a bit more maturity and stayed away from harassing the meter maid. I unfortunately was shown a video of them doing so in a thread at another board where I was vigorously defending them. It would have been nice to say the law suit had no validity and was just about the city losing revenue. Now I'm stuck with no ability to do so because they were being pretty over the top and immature saying crap like "stop stealing" and other nonsense.

It was embarrassing after defending them so much.

end rant (and I still love what they did in principle and message, just dislike the extra stuff that minimizes their case in the court of public opinion.)

What video? Let's share it. I know that a guy from NYC came up and did some bad stuff but he is a comedian from NYC, what do you expect from someone like that?

Keep in mind that this has been happening since 2008 and more than a dozen liberty activists have been involved. There is no doubt that in that time, more than 1 disrespectful thing happened on both sides of this issue. Overall, obviously, the Robin Hooders aren't harassing and the public supports this.

Here it is I think

I also dont want to misrepresent the positives I see in this too. I really like the idea of what they are doing and it has great potential to gain tons of public support....when done right. I just think they ended up a bit carried away and gave the city unfortunate ammo to sue with.

The city claims it is suing because Parking Enforcement Officers were harassed off duty. Since that never happened, the city is lying. So pretty much the city either hates freedom, doesn't like that it is losing money because it relies on the ticket money to fund the Parking Enforcement Officers pay and benefits or something else. Either way, the city is lying about why it is suing. Don't trust the city and what it says. The city is like a police officer in this case. Police officers are legally allowed to and even encouraged to lying while doing their job.

The city took legal action against these individuals after the pursuit and harassment began to extend to the officers even while they were off duty and on their own time enjoying the city as ordinary citizens.

That is a great new piece of info for me, Much appreciated!!

Unfortunately, even though the actions in the video arent the technical reasons for the suit, it still paints the Robin Hooders in a negative light by doing the harassment of the meter maid. I am struggling to defend them based only on that one piece, all other aspects I think they are easily defended.

Yeah, it's like the Ron Paul for President supporters. We have been at it since 2007 or so. Many of us have done horrible things. There was lots of cursing, yelling, harassing, and so it. At times, it's been pretty nasty. People have even resorted to physical attacks like when out of staters came to NH and threw snowballs at one of the most famous 'conservative' voices in the world. I don't hate all Ron Paul supported, though. I do agree that if Ron Paul supporters would have acted more restrained and not harassed as many people and yelled so much that Ron Paul would have likely done a little better in the elections, but I don't think it would have changed the end result. Just like I feel even if all of these Robin Hooders had acted perfect since 2008, the city would have still sued them because it is losing money. It is estimated that the city collects $10 per average per ticket (the fine only starts at $5 but goes up with time). Multiply that by 1,000s of tickets over the last 5 months. That's a lot of money to a city of 25,000 people.

Voting for Ron Paul and other liberty candidates isn't bad. It's a good thing. Similarly, Robin Hooding is a good thing.

Edit: I didn't mean to imply that getting liberty candidates elected isn't more important than reducing parking fees and the like. I'm more excited about getting liberty folks elected. I was just trying to use a comparison that is familiar to critics that frequent this forum.

agree on all counts.

1st day of 3-4 days trial happened yesterday. IMO, zero evidence of harassing came out. No shock there. They did show a rude where a guy from NYC that WAS NOT named in the lawsuit was being a jerk. None of the defendants were ever accused of touching any of the Keene Parking Enforcement Officers (they work for the Police Department, btw). None were accused of breaking any laws. This is a civil trial but on by the city because it was losing potential revenue from not giving out tickets. A known civil rights attorney took the case for the Robin Hood of Keene, free of charge.

The video footage is coming. He is the deal though. 1 of the 3 Parking Enforcement Officers is no long a police department employee. So there are only 2 of them now going out there to write tickets. That right there is probably saving people from 100s of tickets a month.

The thought that comes into my head immediately is this; consider they are against people putting change into parking meters. What does this notion tell a person, and how does this line of thinking lead?

To me it implies that in order for the authorities to make the revenues they desire (police, courts, the city, government, whathaveyou) that they need to make arrests and charge fines upon people.

People going about their business as they are expect to, namely feeding their parking meters how much is expected, is not enough. "No that amount of money isn't enough taxes. Sorry, we want offenders to fine money out of. Stop fulling our false demands."

It's not opaque at all when you actually look at it.
They need to easily be able to obtain citizens to fine, in order to get the amounts of revenue they want.
Just paying the demanded be-there taxes diligently is completely unsatisfactory. In fact the idea is insulting apparently. They demand more.

Why don't the darn city just cut their dishonest nonsense and raise taxes, or else raise meter rates. They want more of people's money to spend, so cut the nonsense, be honest collectivists about wanting to take people's money, and stop with all the crooked backdoor work arounds.

On that point, I was talking with my wife about the nature of police work today and came to this conclusion: If tomorrow, everyone in the country magically obeyed every single law in the books, police would still fine, arrest and collect funds from people.
