Newt Gingrich suspending campaign on May 1st (edit: now Wednesday May 2nd)

I doubt it. The media was just starting to vett Santorum.

Eh, the media had already labelled Santorum an extremist at that point (which they aren't completely wrong about, by the way), so I doubt that much more vetting would have rolled him over.

The thing was I knew a lot of high-end Romney supporters (and even many of those in the campaign) who were in near panic mode before Michigan. If Santorum won that and actually won Super Tuesday much of Romney's 'elite' support would have fled simply because if Romney couldn't beat Santorum in critical states (one being Romney's 'home state') he couldn't win in the General even if he pulled it off against Santorum. Romney's win in Michigan really calmed down his people.

Newt Gingrich will end his White House bid May 1 and formally back Mitt Romney for the Republican presidential nomination, sources tell CNN and Fox News Politics.

Fox News Politics first tweeted news of Gingrich's decision Wednesday morning. The former House Speaker said he expects Romney will be the GOP nominee during a stop in North Carolina, where he claimed he was campaigning as a "citizen."

Gingrich's campaign recently hit some bumps, with the candidate in so much financial trouble he has so far been unable to pay campaign vendors for their services.

According to CNN, Gingrich is likely to hold his final campaign event Tuesday in Washington, D.C., where he will make the announcement surrounded by his family and supporters.

What about all those people that voted for Santorum recently even though he dropped out? What exactly happens with those votes? And why on Earth are people voting for candidates that dropped out?

For the same reason why I'll be writing in Dr. Paul if we don't end up with the nomination.

Great news. I have a bunch of "friends"/family who have Newt as their top guy, Paul second in NJ (and there are some good numbers of newt delegates in NJ, same with santorum).

2 options for the gop, Ron Paul or Obama!

I don't why more Paul-supporters haven't been telling this to the GOP voters, instead of wasting time on TRYING to convince them on Foreign Policy & what not

Ron Paul is the ONLY conservative candiate that CAN BEAT OBAMA due to his appeal across political spectrum from Republicans to Independents to Democrats

So the Tumors Santorum and Newt that diluted the vote count have finally listened to their master's orders to drop out so that the sheep can be bombarded by the media that Mittens is the only GOP candidate remaining. Lovely. Didn't we call this from last year?

They did their jobs well as the anti-Paul option to pull from the anti-Romney faction.

We had just as much a chance to attract anti-Romney vote as they did but the reality is that Paul had been carrying the "unelectable" label for FOUR YEARS & NOTHING WAS DONE TO RID HIM OF THAT TAG! And mainstream voters simply don't "waste" their votes on someone that's strongly perceived as "unelectable"

Look at Romney, the ONLY reason he's leading because he's "electable against Obama" when the fact is that Paul does just as well against Obama & will significantly undercut Obama's Indie & Dem base since Paul is the "peace-candidate" & is pro-civil-liberties

But how many in the Republican primaries know that Ron has the best chance of all Republicans to beat Obama? And what efforts have thus far been put in to promote Ron Paul's superior electability against Obama?

Come on, it isn't rational to believe that Santorum and Gingrich were only running to block Paul. Both of those candidates share the same group of supporters with each other but not with Paul. Santorum has still refused to nominate Romney. Gingrich could have gotten out of the race along with Santorum instead of actually making a play for Delaware if he was a supporter of Romney. Santorum personally dislikes Romney, and could actually have won the election if he had won Michigan and Ohio.

Yeah, too many conspiracy theories floating around!

I find it funny that on RPF people will talk so much about everyone being self-interested INDIVIDUALS but when it comes to this campaign, others are seen as a monolithic unit masterminded to prevent Ron Paul from being president instead of them being just self-interested individuals

Not really. Santorum is on record supporting Romney now here is the link http://www.dailypaul.com/228766/santorum-romney-is-the-right-guy-to-challenge-obama

You know Gingrich just got even more sleazy. He spent months ridiculing Romney and now he's ready to back him and give him full support? He can't win.

They said something about him spending the next six days on kind of a farewell tour, going around and personally thanking people who helped his campaign, and that he wants to give everyone he wants to attend his formal announcement time to make arrangements to be there.

Does that mean we the tax payers have to pay for his SS agents another $40 grand a day for the next six days?

You mean a "begging for cash to pay off his debts" tour?

What about all those people that voted for Santorum recently even though he dropped out? What exactly happens with those votes? And why on Earth are people voting for candidates that dropped out?

Because anyone who would vote for Santorum is:

1. Politically ignorant
2. Institutionalized
3. Has no television because Jesus didn't pay their phone bill.
4. All/some of the above

For the same reason why I'll be writing in Dr. Paul if we don't end up with the nomination.

I think the reasons are VERY different. I'd say half of the people who voted for him were unaware he'd dropped out because they do not pay attention. All they heard was he was the Christian candidate. That's all they needed.

It would be the BESTEST news ever if your "friends"/family KNOW the delegates and have influence with them :)
