NEW LAW require insurance to pay for chips implanted in babies! [Cochlear implants]

Sorry, why is it bad for deaf children to be able to hear? Or is it the intervention you are against?

From the outside looking in, cochlear implants have always been controversial in the deaf community.

It seems I've stumbled on the Reverend Sharpton of deafness.

Why do you have the right to force your culture on a child because you personally wouldn't want a CI? I don't believe that's your intent, but that argument comes from the same line of logic as yours: that I'm trying to destroy deaf culture by giving my child a CI.

Simply saying I'm audist sounds like a cop-out because you don't actually have the data. Maybe you do, who knows? If you do have the data, shouldn't you provide it to try and steer me from my audist ways?

Again, I point to the argument of paralysis or blindness. I don't know what a child born blind or paralyzed will want in 12, 14, 16, or 18 years, but I make the assumption that they would want to see or walk if we had it in our power to allow them to do so. I make the same assumption with a baby born deaf, not because I want to destroy a culture, but because I would want that. I would want to hear, or see, or walk. How is that any different from you assuming they wouldn't want to hear (or see, or walk)? Are you [whatever the opposite of audist is]?

Now you're just being downright anti-Semetic. :D

Omg!

WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!?!?!?

DON'T YOU GET IT? YOU ALL FREEDOM LOVERS ARE AGAINST RFID CHIPS, MICROCHIP IMPLANTS AND OTHER FORM OF FORCIBLE METHODS!?!?

BEING DEAF IS NOT CONSIDERED AS A LIFE THREAT AND WHY DO YOU THINK IT'S OK FOR PARENTS AND MEDICAL PROVIDERS TO REMOVE THE DEAF BABY'S RIGHTS TO BE FULLY INFORMED AND CONSENT. GET ALL CHIPS AND WIRES PROGRAMMED INTO THEIR HEADS?.... THIS IS CALLED "BORG"... THEY WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO PLAY ANY ROUGH SPORT, NO SCUBA DIVING, NO ACCESS TO USING MRI AND EXPERIENCE MANY SERIOIUS SIDE EFFECTS...

WELL FROM NOW ON, I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND YOUR THOUGHTS THAT IT'S OK FOR US TO TAKE CHILD'S INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AWAY, PUT IN COCHLEAR IMPLANTS AND THAT THEY ARE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FORCIBLE MICROCHIPS... YOU ARE BEING SO CYNICAL  AND I HAVE NO OTHER WAYS TO MAKE YOU UNDERSTAND WHERE WE COME FROM...

(ADMINISTRATOR BYRAN)
CAN YOU PLEASE REMOVE THIS THREAD?

I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND YOUR THOUGHTS THAT IT'S OK FOR US TO TAKE CHILD'S INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AWAY,
Is it a child's right to get an implant if it would help them to hear? Who is to decide what the child wants? Is there a right to be deaf? A right to be able to hear? The law would not require the implants- only that the insurance company pay for them if one is deemed apropriate. They are not telling parents they have to put a cochlear implant in their children. They are not being rounded up and tagged like cattle. I think you are over reacting to the issue.

Howdy,

Mona, your criticism of Cradle2graveconservative seems unnecessarily harsh. Is it so awful for parents to assume that their deaf infant children would desire to hear?

I would not consider it an attack on, say, quadriplegics if doctors were able to surgically mend spinal cord injuries, all of the sudden. Please explain how you feel; I would love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you for your time.

Cheers,

Um, again, I've known deaf people who were full grown and wanted cochlear implants and obtained them and increased their ability to hear, and I've known some who are adamantly against it and don't want them.

Why is it so difficult for some of you to understand that some people might not want these implants that make you like a robot? It's one thing to put a computer chip in your heart to keep you alive, it's another thing to put a chip in for something that isn't necessary.

Cradle2graveconservative,

Thank you for the reasonable response. It was interesting to read, (though I think the last paragraph was uncalled-for). I wish I knew more about deaf culture, so I could weigh in on the discussion in an informed manner.

Sincerely,
