Bills Releases Ad: "I Wish You Wouldn't"
BLOOMINGTON, MN—The Kurt Bills campaign today released an ad bound for television later in the campaign entitled "I Wish You Wouldn't." It focuses on Klobuchar's avoidance of serious issues in serious times.
The ad's title is a direct quote from US Supreme Court Associate Justice Elena Kagan, uttered during her confirmation hearing in the Judiciary Committee. It was in response to Senator Klobuchar's rambling discourse about a sleepover with 15 year-olds after the midnight opening of a movie in the "Twilight" series.
There are few events in the Senate more momentous than the lifetime appointment of a Supreme Court Justice, and fewer still than the hearings in which the Senators and the American public get their only opportunity to hear from candidates nominated to the position. It is the only time before the confirmation that appointees to the Supreme Court can be questioned.
Klobuchar took her time as a member of the Judiciary Committee to discuss a vampire movie. In response to Klobuchar's ramblings that she felt an urge to ask about the "case" between two characters in the movie, Kagan responded with a tight smile: "I wish you wouldn't."
The ad focuses on Klobuchar as a lightweight dealing with heavyweight issues. Under her tenure unemployment has increased 80%, the national debt has nearly doubled, the yearly deficit has increased 700%, and the number of Minnesotans on food stamps has increased 96%.
"Amy Klobuchar is a lightweight, but the problems facing our country are heavyweight. She wastes her time talking trivialities when the issues we face are dire," said Mike Osskopp, Manager of the Bills campaign.
"The debt, the deficit, unemployment, and poverty are all up big under her leadership. Income is down. Minnesota can't afford another 6 years of lightweight leadership in heavyweight times," said Osskopp.
Bills has challenged Klobuchar to a series of townhall-style debates. Klobuchar has demurred, committing to only 2 debates, and none after August. Bills is asking for 10-12 townhalls; there were over 20 debates in the 2010 gubernatorial contest.
"Minnesota has a long tradition of vibrant debate and discussion in political campaigns. Amy Klobuchar is ducking debates because she is a political and intellectual lightweight," Osskopp concluded.
