Gordon VanGilder, a 72 year old retired schoolteacher, now faces felony charges for possessing a 225 year old flintlock pistol, which he says he told a sheriff’s deputy about during a routine traffic stop. Antique guns are too dangerous (who are they trying to protect--the barrel of a 225 year old gun is as likely to go backwards as to propel the lead ball forward), old cars are too dirty, old appliances too energy inefficient...

They're trying to flush every previous millennium down the memory hole. God forbid we learn anything from history--then we might not be doomed to repeat it.

This is a horrible injustice. One issue I see is that the citizen should never give permission for a search of the vehicle.
Also what was the RAS for the stop/detainment in the first place? Also I have lived in NJ since 1992( Not proud of it) I have never seen a sheriff make a routine traffic stop.. That seems unusual to me...

Also keep in mind that NJ does not have any mention in its state constitution concerning a citizens right to keep and bear arms.. Hence my reason for calling NJ the biggest anti 2A state in the country...

Mr.Vanglider does have in my opinion the best 2A / gun rights lawyer in the state of NJ..

In his defense, he is 72 YO and more then likely had very few encounters if any with LE, The sheriff was an ass H from jump street with his bullying tactics... I find it hard to believe that the state is moving forward with prosecuting this case... I total waste of tax payer money... Welcome to NJ...

Cop had it in his head to toss this man's ride, for whatever reason, or more likely, no reason at all.

You call the attack dog unit, let him sniff around and give a pre-arranged "alert" to his handler, boom, there you go, probably cause. Now they can search and they can seize it under asset forfeiture if they so desired.

Maybe the cops needed a new toy and they figured this man's seized vehicle would do nicely. Finding the flintlock complicated the issue and irritated the cops, more than likely.

The government courts have ruled that all that is perfectly legal by the way.

Mr. Van Gilder, a collector of 18th-century memorabilia, said he had the gun unloaded and wrapped in a cloth in the glove compartment of his vehicle when he was pulled over in November by a Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy for a minor traffic violation

Ironically, this is the county right next door to Atlantic County, where a similar incident got Shaneen Allen jammed up with prosecutors last year. Sounds like it is going to be the same kind of fight, only in this case the charges are even MORE ridiculous. Ms. Allen had a working firearm, whereas Mr. VanGilder had a 300 year old antique.

Mr. VanGilder has retained Evan Nappen, the same Second Amendment attorney who represented Shaneen Allen. There's a link to the legal defense fund for Mr. VanGilder on the front page of Mr. Nappen's web site:
