Hours after the top two leaders of the Clark County GOP resigned, Ron Paul supporters who took over said Thursday they could now focus on electing "genuine" conservatives.
Chairman Dave Gibbs and Vice Chairman Woody Stroupe both announced Wednesday they were resigning because of the tensions between them and backers of GOP presidential candidate Paul. The two men said they would instead work with "Team Nevada" to help elect Republicans in 2012.
Team Nevada is run by the Republican National Committee to help elect the presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and other top Republicans. The RNC plans to run its campaign ground game and much of its money through Team Nevada to bypass the Paul-led county and state parties.
The newly emboldened leaders of the Clark County GOP seemed glad to get rid of Gibbs, who backs Romney.
The county party's executive board packed largely with newly elected Paul supporters immediately appointed one of its own, Cindy Lake, as acting chair. She had been secretary.
The new leaders said in a statement that the local party in Nevada's most populous county could now focus on electing like-minded candidates.
"After months of turbulence and instability following the executive board elections held at the Clark County Republican Convention, the CCRP Executive Board is now able to concentrate on the task of developing a consistent, accessible message that will allow the party to take a large role in electing genuine conservative candidates to office," acting Chairman Lake said in a statement early Thursday. "The CCRP Executive Board is looking forward to working together with Republicans across Clark County towards increasing Republican registration, building a strong, robust party, and achieving electoral success in the November elections."
The statement was signed "in liberty," the motto of Paul backers who believe the federal government has become too big, too expensive and too intrusive.
