Neoconservatives Declare War on Donald Trump

Donald Trump’s runaway success in the GOP primaries so far is setting off alarm bells among neoconservatives who are worried he will not pursue the same bellicose foreign policy that has dominated Republican thinking for decades.

Neoconservative historian Robert Kagan — one of the prime intellectual backers of the Iraq war and an advocate for Syrian intervention — announced in the Washington Post last week that if Trump secures the nomination “the only choice will be to vote for Hillary Clinton.”

Max Boot, an unrepentant supporter of the Iraq war, wrote in the Weekly Standard that a “Trump presidency would represent the death knell of America as a great power,” citing, among other things, Trump’s objection to a large American troop presence in South Korea.

Trump has done much to trigger the scorn of neocon pundits. He denounced the Iraq war as a mistake based on Bush administration lies, just prior to scoring a sizable victory in the South Carolina GOP primary. In last week’s contentious GOP presidential debate, he defended the concept of neutrality in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which is utterly taboo on the neocon right. “It serves no purpose to say you have a good guy and a bad guy,” he said, pledging to take a neutral position in negotiating peace.

Jacob Heilbrunn, author of They Knew They Were Right: The Rise of the Neocons, suggested in July 2014 that neoconservatives might be preparing to ally with Hillary Clinton.

With Trump’s ascendancy, it’s possible that the parties will re-orient their views on war and peace, with Trump moving the GOP to a more dovish direction and Clinton moving the Democrats towards greater support for war.

Neither is our friend. Allow them to engage in mutually assured destruction. Play them off each other, and emerge from the carnage unscathed.

What a bunch of BS. Trump was in favor of the Iraq war before we started it and is already talking about bombing Iran, increasing tensions with China, nuking Syria and going after terrorists wherever they are without regard to the national sovereignty of other nations.

He has also spoken repeatedly about increasing military spending to a "huge" level.

Sure, it's not the neocons' preferred interventionist policy, but if you thought the foreign policy of the neocons was reckless... well, my friend, you ain't seen nothing yet!

Agreed.

But that does make Trump a valuable tool. "Tool", "friend", whatever. The destruction is what matters.

It's evident that his geopolitical knowledge is still extremely limited. The statements you cite, and numerous others, are proof of this. He has no clue what he's talking about regarding FP... After all, he's a business man, not a politician. But he will have a lot of "very smart people" to advise him in FP affairs, and I can assure you after proper council, he won't be nuking anyone.

But what's also clear is that the neocons who are strategically entrenched in all levels of government, and who have taken over US FP, will not be a part of that team of advisers. That's clear based on their reaction to his success. It would seem to me that there is no back room deal to stack up his administration's FP positions with dual citizen neocons. Otherwise why are they panicking?

Routing out these parasites would be an enormous victory for Liberty.

I can't wait until Tronald unveils all his neocon foreign policy advisers.

Oh, for crying out...

Geez, man. WAKE UP! You are believing what you want to believe. I wish there was some easy way of exposing this to you, but there isn't. You accept the good things he tells you, but dismiss the bad things he tells you. You ignore all evidence of either.

He says he's going to get the "smartest people" and you somehow think they would be friendly to liberty. But there's simply no evidence to support that theory other than your wishful thinking. Those most experienced in foreign policy are those who have been engaged in it for years. Those are not the people you should want.

Trump is a self-promoter. That's his whole modus operandi. A self-promoter will do anything that allows him the ability to feel smarter and better than the next guy. This is extremely dangerous when it comes to foreign policy. He will use the power of government force to try to get what he wants. That's what the evidence of his life shows.

What about this?

That would end the debate right there...

He says he'll release his full list of foreign policy advisers soon...

But so far, according to 3 sources, he's now receiving FP advice from retired Lieutenant General turned whistle-blower Michael Flynn:

This guy is the patriot who blew the whistle on the Obama admin supporting Al Qeada in Syria and willfully allowing the rise of ISIS!

This guy is definitely NOT a neocon:

Not too shabby for starters, huh?

I think Trump is the least interventionist choice there is right now but because he is so naive on foreign affairs he will just end up with the same advisers from the Bush admin and Obama admin.

Naive, perhaps, but definitely not stupid.

When an outsider threatens a hostile takeover of a corporation, the current management often adopts a poison pill. Promising to turn to Hillary is the poison pill in this case.
