So, had a good look around and sent a whole bunch of e-mails and have had little or no response with regards to buying silver and having it shipped to us in our new home of Peru.

We want to invest a reasonably substantial amount in the 5-figure region and we are finding it hard to understand why it is so difficult to get any traction with this.

We have also been told to avoid silver coins as they are currency and harder to shift - Any truth in this?

We are trying to avoid large bars like 1000oz or 1Kg as they are rather unweildy and harder to sell off in the event that we may need to realise some cash in a hurry.

I have read some useful information here on this topic in the past from some people who appeared to know what they were talking about. Can anybody suggest ways (other than eBay etc.) to buy silver online without filling out lots of forms and providing lots of id that will simply make the process take too long.

We believe that silver is seriously undervalued and is inevitably soon to to "go ballistic" and we would like to get this transaction completed quickly and effectively.

Any help/advice gratefully received!

From my original post:

"We have also been told to avoid silver coins as they are currency and harder to shift - Any truth in this?"

Maybe buying coins is worthwhile but so far the information and advice we have been given has been to avoid them.

We have already e-mailed the company that you referred us to with an offer to buy from them and have received no response in over three days.

As I said, advice and help gratefully recieved as we need to do this FAST!

Thanks for the link. I will read it in full now.

Harder to shift?? What you do mean by that?

The transfer of currency outside the nation that issued it is controlled. So, old silver U.S. coins are harder to move to Peru than silver bullion is, and likewise for gold.

Just a side note Im pretty sure that Peru mines the most silver in the whole world. You might want to search around and see is you can find some local dealers. When I went to Mexico in the spring I was able to find a some silver for below market value. Happy hunting.

It's hard to find a buyer for a giant bar of silver during economic collapse.

Sadly, I don't know anything about sending silver overseas. I wouldn't worry about rounds. Those aren't currency. They were probably talking about American Silver Eagles, which are currency (there are a number of others that are as well, just make sure they are denominated in oz rather than dollars or any other national currency denomination.

You will always be reliant upon finding somebody who is willing to buy such a large quantity.

I am sure that in the 1st world (US, Europe etc.) this is easier to do but here in Peru, I assume, not so easy!

That said, if you have a good counter-argument I am all ears!

I wasn't making an argument. I just didn't know what your meant.

Have you considered GoldMoney? They are a great way to purchase bullion.

If you want coins in your hand in Peru it is going to be difficult because stuff gets 'lost in the mail' down there in South America.

Aahhh....All becomes a little clearer already!

I LOVE THIS PLACE!

So, rounds and small bars..Got it!

100oz too big or is that fairly "small" in the great scheme?

Sorry to be such a duffer but there is a LOT of differing advice out there and I genuinely trust you guys to give the most honest and unbiased information.

I have done a LOT of reading but I am failing dismally to get anything concrete together, especially when it comes to actually buying the stuff!

Anyways, as I said above, I am an idiot!

You need not put yourself down like that.

I do think one ounce silver rounds would be what you should be looking for. You can usually get twenty of them in a tube. A box of 500 will weigh around 16 kilos, tubes and all.

We have investigated them but, to be honest, offshore or not, their vaults are not as safe as mine!

FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!!!

Not only that, but the application process makes it something that is likely to take too long for us as we are in a real hurry!

We think that you are right! We had actually come to this conclusion by ourselves but, and there is ALWAYS a but, where the heck do we go to buy about 50Kgs of the things?!

I am surprised by how hard it seems to be to just find and buy silver. Either the process is a long-winded application or it is an eBay-style transaction that carries risks such as getting some"Chinese" bullion that is basically worthless!

Also, getting stuff into Peru is something that most dealers show little interest in. Hilarious when you consider that Peru mines more silver than any other country in the world.

Maybe I will just walk into the bank and ask!

If you have silver mines, you probably also have silver mints. You should be able to call a local one and get them to mint it for you.

As to the denomination, it depends on what you want to use them for, and what you think will happen. If you think everything is fine and dandy, but that silver is going to go up, you would want 1000 oz bars, because they are a nice, dense store of wealth, and they are cheaper than other forms.

By contrast, if you think your local economy is going to collapse, then you will want it in the smallest denominations you can get in order to barter for food and other consumable supplies.

If, on a third hand, you thought the economy was going to go to shit, but you wanted to take advantage of that, and buy capital for cheap at the bottom, you would want a variety of sizes from 1-1000oz, depending on what you want to buy (10oz for large animals or vehicles, 100 oz for groups of houses or apartment blocks, or 1000oz blocks for factories or large tracts of land).

Myself, I'm saving up with small denominations (1 oz and below), and 10 oz bars on about a 1:1 ration by weight. Unfortunately, I can't afford anything larger than that. Of course, I should be able to buy a block of houses near my own home to rent out with my little 10oz bars (10oz bar equals a well-maintained low income rental in a fairly nice area post collapse USA--I can't speak as to what will happen in other countries).

Wonderful advice and looking for a local mint as we speak! Thank you so much for your comprehensive response. I like the 1:1 ratio idea too! Makes a lot of sense!

Here's looking at the markets with bated breath!

You find that mint please speak up that is an interesting idea.

no silver or gold for sale in my city's coin shops...getting some out of pawn shops though--credit suisse/francs/pesos. good time to buy, pawns don't speculate on how real the spot price is...
