Gust of Wind Traps Baby Inside Locked Car. Mom Calls 911 for Help. Mom Gets Ticketed by Police.

The frantic mother called 911 for help and the police gave her a ticket for suspicion of child abuse by neglect.

Omaha, Nebraska: A woman taking her niece out of the SUV after an outing to the pool was shocked when the wind blew the door shut with her keys and the child inside. The car automatically locked. The aunt, the girl's mom, and two other relatives frantically tried to get the door open using a hanger and screwdriver, and, when they couldn't, they called 911.

The cops arrived, broke the window, and got the child out, safe and sound.

Then the cops ticketed the mom on suspicion of child abuse by neglect.

As The Omaha World-Herald reports:

Lt. Darci Tierney, a police spokeswoman, said the ticket was not an overreaction by the officer who responded to the 911 call.

"We make decisions in the moment with all the information we have available,'' she said. "This can be a super dangerous situation. People die in these circumstances."

Children die when they are forgotten in cars, not when they are about to be taken out of cars, the wind slams the door shut, and the family immediately does everything humanly possible to get the door open quickly.

The girl, just shy of 2, was in the car for about 15 minutes. It was a 93-degree day, and 97 degrees in the un-air-conditioned car. The girl appeared warm to the paramedic—um, of course she'd be warm—so she was taken to the local hospital. She turned out to be fine.

The wind, by the way, was gusting up to 40 miles per hour that day.

To add insult to non-injury, Lt. Tierney is also quoted as reminding people that in a situation like this one, "Don't be afraid to call 911 for help."

(Calling you people is the very last resort leftenant - AF)

Yeah, and be ready to call a defense lawyer, too.

You would not want the police to play the role of Judge, jury, and or executioner. This is how the justice system in America works. She will have her day in court to explain to the judge that the wind blew her door shut. The judge might have her take some parenting classes. Not smart on her part to have her keys and child inside the car while she is outside. Not a call for a police officer to make. Better leave it to the judge.

We only need one Texan on the board, thanks.

She should lawyer up....

And go after the car company that saddled her with the unnecessary safety wank.

If companies are going to give you modern "safety" features like locking your car doors, they need to feel it when that feature leads to prosecutions.

Seriously, who the fuck asked for that?

This story is probably not over yet. Child Protection Services will probably show up at her house and remove her child now. Then she will be stuck in the Kangaroo Family court system, where due process of law is not followed.

Looks like she should have just broken the window in the first place.

Why call a cop to do it for you?

Better yet, just call the local towing company and have them open the door for you.

I hope not, CPS has a history of turning children over to pedo trafficking rings.

This...

I am willing to bet that the woman was of the lower income group and she "believed" that she could get free help from the "public servants" (gag...). Yes, it might have cost her up to $100 to have a locksmith or towing company come and open the door for her but looking back I'm sure that's what she wishes she'd done. Still, it could have been worse, they could have shot her and her daughter (if the goon "feared for his life")...

Crybabies. That's spring weather in the sunbelt. People hate it, but deal with it.

uhhuh, should you ever be allowed to breed, lets lock your <2yr old in a car with the windows up on a 93degree day and see how long you sit and point fingers calling it a crybaby.

It was a good thing an Officer was there, to save that child's life, from that woman's obviously poor decision making skills

That's why people should belong to an auto club or have roadside assistance through their auto insurance company.

withdrawn. I thought it said air conditioned. I was doing other shit at the same time as reading this thread when I commented. [I really shouldn't post distracted...] Thanx for catching that. ~hugs~

....and "allowed" to breed? You going full statist on us, bro? Who shall I have to ask permission of? Big Sister? :( #disappointedinspecs

Or you could of just knocked the window out like the cop did, if it was truly a matter of life or death.

You have a point there. However, I don't see myself being able to break a car window without some big heavy tool.

On the other hand, there is also a point to holding keys in my hand so I don't have to break the window.

Can't imagine what the other adults were doing when the wind blew the door shut. With other adults around, it seems like some of them would also be getting in the car if they weren't already in.

It's a pain in the ass. I have a car that does that. The other day, I did not exit the car fast enough after shutting off the engine, so it armed the alarm and when I opened the door from the inside, the alarm started going off.
