NASA Photos: California Fires Seen From Space as Giant Plumes of Smoke

By Sydney Pereira On 12/6/17 at 10:32 AM

Thick plumes of smoke bellowed from raging fires in southern California through Tuesday night—so thick and extensive it could be seen from space.

NASA captured the photo Tuesday afternoon from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite, which shows the quickest and largest blaze, Thomas fire in Ventura County and two smaller fires south of Ventura. The fire has destroyed more than 50,000 acres, according to Cal Fire, the state's Department for Forestry and Fire Protection. Two smaller fires, Rye and Creek, in Los Angeles County, have destroyed 5,000 and more than 11,000 acres respectively. (Per Cal Fire, fires are typically named for the areas where they start.) The fire, which began Monday night, has forced 27,000 people to flee their homes.

“The fire is very dangerous and spreading rapidly, but we’ll continue to attack it will all we’ve got,” Governor Jerry Brown said Tuesday in a statement. “It’s critical residents stay ready and evacuate immediately if told to do so.”

No indication of foul play. This was in news few weeks ago:

Cal Fire continues to probe cause of deadly wildfires despite arson arrest

  • Sonoma County Sheriff Robert Giordano said an arson suspect was seen "walking away from a small fire."
  • The 29-year-old suspect allegedly had "a fire extinguisher and a lighter with him," the sheriff said.
  • Despite the arson arrest, Cal Fire said Tuesday afternoon it continues to investigate the cause of each of the wildfires in Northern California.
  • The wildfires have claimed more than 41 lives, and many more people remain listed as missing.

The predominant wind direction is WNW or NW, but the reason for the fires is the santa anas that create the NE winds which is why they are blowing out into the ocean.

Imagine if those plumes were going over Los Angeles, instead of out into the ocean..

maybe the heat will aggravate the fault lines and California will break off from the continent and go floating out to sea.

that would be awesome sauce.

adios, mofos.

Right now the fires are burning the rich people in Bel-Air and a few skinheads who hang out down by the river in Ventura.

FT reported famous old house of Johnny Cash was surrounded by ring of fire:

Daily briefing: Trump’s Jerusalem call, Apple’s likely $47bn tax windfall, California ring of fire

California fire reaches Pacific Fires have been spreading in Southern California, fanned by the seasonal Santa Ana winds. The biggest, in Ventura county, jumped Highway 101 to reach the Pacific Ocean, after consuming more than 50,000 acres. More than 27,000 people have been forced to flee and a ring of fire has surrounded Johnny Cash’s former home.

Are you willing to take dannno in?

When we had our home built 12 years ago I tried hard to find someone who would build it using steel studs with sheet-rock and brick. Steel studs are commonplace in commercial construction but I can't find where anyone is using them for homes. I have used them for partition walls for many years and I find the heavy gauge steel studs to be stronger than the wood ones and fireproof and bug-proof to boot...
