NASA Creating Online Multiplayer Video Game

Let's start a private colony on mars.
An experimental liberty society.

Too late?

good to know our taxes are paying for a MMO. Jesus if the US tax dollar is going to go into paying for games couldn't they at least make something cool.

THis is meant to be an outreach to middle school and high school students who are already playing MMO's.
The hope is they get interested in the career paths that NASA will need in the future.
It could also be used for simulation and testing purposes.

IMagine, instead of having a handful of ideas for space future, you have 100,000 ideas being tried out in simulation.

NASA sucks too much to go to mars in the real world, so they create a video game to make the trip in a virtual world.

This game fails already.

I don't see anyone landing on mars either. Not a cheap trip.
Though nasa did score two hole-in-one's(actually one rover did land in a small crater) while Japan's space agency and ESA both failed in their mars landing attempts.

Shit isn't that easy.
And again, this isn't a substitute for lack of mars ambition. its a tool to get kids interested in the sciences.
If they can farm mobs mindlessly in WOW, maybe they can spend their time doing something they may learn from..

Largely it is a failure of financial instruments. No one has an Extreme High Risk, Very High Capital, low yield 10-15 year investment plan.

Projects like that have previously been undertaken by institutions like Governments and the Vatican.

The Government posting a $30 Billion dollar prize for the first private company to land people on Mars would probably be enough to close the business model. It would be a lot cheaper than $130 Billion Nasa currently plans to spend and would involve multiple teams.

As it stands private companies are having to take the loooong road to space. It literally has a 100 km high barrier to entry.

I truly believe the best idea on the table right now is mars direct.
But like I also stated earlier, imagine having 100,000 competing ideas in simulation.
The amount of new ideas being expressed will increase... and this is a good thing.

The project also allows user to submit new ideas and implementations for the mmo.
A lot of the graphics are already made for various other projects, so the cost may not be very much.
3 different companies are contributing.
