Recent Passaic Valley High School graduate Matthew LaCorte is under attack by the State of New Jersey for having Ron Paul signs on his front lawn. After receiving two (2) warnings for having lawn signs on his private property Matt was finally issued a Summons from the Borough of Woodland Park for the heinous crime of “display of election signs prior to election date”.

Matthew, an incoming Political Science major at Hofstra University and active member of Young Americans for Liberty (YAL), doesn’t believe he’s done anything illegal.

Sound familiar? It should. Just two years ago New Jersey towns such as “Paterson and Hawthorne had to repeal their lawn sign ordinances after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) fought the towns and won.”[1]

Matt has been told if he doesn’t bend to the will of the State and hand over his first Amendment Rights he’ll face hundreds of dollars in fines.
“New Jersey’s towns need to know that overreaching limitations on lawn signs are unconstitutional and that the ACLU-NJ is ready to defend the public’s rights against such restrictions,”" stated ACLU-NJ Legal Director Edward Barocas[2]

On July 28, 2011 Matt officially filed a complaint with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Respect Dude. I'm originally from Jersey near you. My dad's business is in Paterson. I went to school at DePaul, so I know a lot of PV kids, but I lived in West Milford/Kinnelon.

Great news! Why would any town ever pass an ordinance like this? How do these local leaders get away with this.

Wow can't believe I'd say thank you ACLU. What a pathetic ordinance. Keep fighting the good fight.

Property rights + 1st Amendment political speech.

Nail their a$$es!!

Anyone have "The Judge's" email address? Send him a copy of this article. I wanna see it on freedomwatch. Its his backyard too - he might be interested.

Change your signs to say: "End the FED," "End the Wars," "Stop the President of Borough of Woodland Park from Spending $1,000 a Night on Mexican Coke & and 15 year Olds Girls Working the Age Old Art of Hooking," "Spend Money Here at Home, Not Overseas," etc.

Since each is a never ending campaign you can keep the signs up for ever.

(Actually, I'd be in the law library right now researching the topic if it were me. It's good to be able to spout off a couple of cases when speaking with the local media or the man.

LOL @ "the heinous crime of “display of election signs prior to election date". WTF!!! Stay strong Matt!!

It would be awesome if Judge picked that up.

Might be able to pull some law precedence from Marsh vs. Alabama case. I can't remember exactly if it had defined free speech on private property or public property, but there might be something useful there.

You know, I never hear anything good about Jersey. Ever.

Show those buttheads what free speech is for. :)
