GIRARD, Ohio –- A woman returned home from college to surprise her mother and ended up shot in the arm.

Officers were called to Ohio Avenue in Girard at about 9 p.m. Friday for a shooting, WJW reports.

Police said the homeowner was in her bedroom when she became frightened by a commotion inside the house. Then, a person came running into the room so she fired one round from her revolver.

She quickly realized she shot her 18-year-old daughter.

The daughter’s friend told police they just arrived from college to surprise her mother. He said he heard a single gunshot and screaming, then went inside to help.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to her elbow and was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment, according to the police report.

I bet she ends up getting charged. Even though Ohio apparently adheres to castle doctrine, that doctrine still says there has to be a reasonable threat to life or property.
If she shot her own daughter I don't think a prosecutor would have any problem at all proving she didn't take any time to determine whether there was a threat.

Its why I dont care for night sights. If you cant clearly identify your target, and the backdrop, dont pull the trigger.

These are some things they could be teaching in schools. Back when kids went to school to learn something, firearm safety basics were part of the curriculum.

Another reason women shouldn't be allowed around guns.

Col. Cooper's rules were in both of the classes I took to fulfill requirements for my CHP.
I think those types of laws are like seat belt laws: I am fundamentally against them but I can't argue with the results.

Would she be charged if she were a cop?

What is Zippy's motive with making us aware of this type of article....... at this time?

If the mom had called 911 instead of shooting her daughter, her daughter probably wouldn't have gotten shot.

Cops "accidentally" kill the wrong person 11 times as often as do ordinary civilian gun owners. They deliberately kill the wrong person, or an innocent person many, MANY times more often than that. Dogs? Fagedaboudit.

ETA: If one really gave a shit about saving lives one would first call for disarming police. Hey, if it will save just one life, right?

Or, get a white light for any weapons that will accept one, and use those only at night.

I'm surprised how many people don't have lights on their weapons, I'd be more expecting to use them at night, than during the day anyway. I just bought this 1200 lumen one for my rifle a couple of days ago, and it lights up from my place to the nearest building, over 600 meters away.

If mom had called 911 her daughter would have most likely not survived. Protocol would dictate that office safety is paramount. Any perceived threat (911 call about an intruder) would result in the elimination of ANY threat. Hope the woman doesn’t have dog...

They would survive if they took one of my Compliance Courses.

When expecting Police to arrive at your location, I teach my students to:

1) Write a note that says "Hello Police, please come in" and place this on your door, leaving the door wide open
2) Roll up your sleeves to at least elbow height
3) Clear your immediate surrounding of any items/clutter
4) Lie down with your arms extended palm down until the Police arrive.

This technique has a 100% safety rate, provided that you have time to complete this sequence.

If you skip a step the safety rate drops to about 80%.

(If you have a dog, that's an entirely separate checklist)

You need to lower the tuition to be more inclusive. And start accepting EBT payments.
