What is the scoop on Bevin?

McConnell to get Tea Party challenger

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) will face a primary challenger from the right in Matt Bevin, a local businessman and Tea Party candidate who plans to announce his run for Senate this week.

Bevin, who has been exploring the race since February, is reportedly already buying airtime and has met with multiple conservative groups about his run. He'll launch a 3-day, 8-stop tour of the state after he formally announces his campaign on Wednesday.

He's got the $$$ to do it. Will be interesting to see if he can engineer a backlash.

Bevin plans to announce his senatorial bid Wednesday, according to The Hill. He'll then begin a three-day trip around the state with eight stops.

He has reserved TV airtime in several Kentucky markets for this week, presumably for ads, under the name "Matt Bevin for Senate" Politico reports. Politico says Bevin has been meeting with national conservative groups, including the Club for Growth, the Senate Conservatives Fund, and the Madison Project.

The McConnell camp on Friday issued strong criticism of Bevin.

"While it is sad to see someone who claims to be a Republican doing Barack Obama's bidding, his campaign is nothing more than a nuisance," McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton said in a statement.

Bevin has been mulling a run for months. He is a partner in the Louisville-based hedge fund Waycross Partners, and owner of Bevin Brothers Manufacturing, a Connecticut bell maker begun in 1832.

Bevin's personal wealth could help him against McConnell, who has almost $10 million cash on hand for his campaign.

On the Democratic side, Kentucky's Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes has entered the race.

Yeah, Jesse, and CA and TX were a nuisance too, eh?

What does tea party even mean? Is he pro liberty?

How does Benton arrive at the claim that Bevin is doing Obamas bidding?

The only thing I know about this guy is that he used to attend Louisville Tea Party meetings.

If you want donations all you have to say is "Obama's bad" and dumb people start writing checks.

I think this is great. McConnell has been doing Rand's bidding for just this reason. Now that the threat has been realized, Rand's value just shot up even more.

Rand is the most powerful Senator in the GOP right now solely because of McConnell trying to cover his rear cough cough reelection.

Let's just hope it doesn't all come crashing down after Mitch gets reelected. Rand will have momentum from all this, but he'll need it to last 2 more years. Mitch may even end up being the majority leader in 2014. Rand won't have any leverage (that I can see) so he may have to do some of Mitch's bidding. I don't know, it's a tough call with what deals are going on behind the scenes.
