Minnesota Appreciation Thread

Thank you guys. I've always admired your political culture. I secretly cheer for the Golden Gophers against the giant megalith red and grey dunderhead team where I come from. I'm going to see your great songwriter Craig Finn on Thursday. And you've given RP his best result yet!

My precinct went RP 16 RS 14 MR 8 NG 6. We needed 22 delegates, so anyone who wanted to be one could be one. We got 13 delegates. I know quite a few of them were RP supporters, but I don't know them all. I wasn't planning on it (because I am moving in June), but I became a delegate. Heard the convention I need to go to is in March, so I can make it.

I was elected a delegate as well as my absentee roommate. The crowd in general was quite boisterous for their support of Ron. My straw vote in my precinct when Frothy 4, Newt 3, Ron 3 and Mittens 2. Lots of first timers there including myself. BPOU here I come :) Shout out to Marianne and the rest of the crew for their tireless work. Heroes in my book.

Precinct near the Univerity of Minnesota, mostly students. Attendance of 35, RP receiving 31 of those votes. I had to give an impromptu speech on ron's behalf, as there wasn't somebody prepared already to give one. The speech went well. 4/4 delegates for RON PAUL! (one being me, im very excited!!!)

Also, there were two much older gentleman in attendance at mine, turns out were neighbors. They have to be at least 65. I was thrilled to learn they were both Ron Paul supporters.

Also, I'm the new Chairman of my Precinct and a Paul supporter is the Vice Chairman.

Our vote was:
Paul - 9
Santorum - 4
Romney - 0
Gingrich - 0

- ML

When do we get to see these "delegates" appearing as official numbers?

Would be nice to see Ron with a large delegate list as part of a "he's electable" campaign. Something to hold up against the dim light of countless losses. Honestly, if this were a football game and we were 0-8 in the season, I think the coach might be getting replaced at this point. At the very least an huge change in game plan would be called for.

FML... I got elected Precinct Chair for SHOREVIEW P3 in RAMSEY COUNTY...

Anndddd my supporters suck, 3 didn't show up. So we got 4/11 delegates. And in terms of the straw poll:
Santorum: 12
Romney: 6
Paul: 5
Gingrich: 2

They're calling it for MN at only 30% reporting in.

At least we got another 2nd place win. Nab them delegates.

Thank you Minnesota!!!:)

My precinct:

Santorum 18
Paul 14
Gingrich 7
Romney 5

8/14 delegates for Ron Paul.

It looked pretty much like a Paul vs. Santorum battle when people were expressing their views and who to vote for. The highlight of the night for me was one old guy who looked to be about 80 was saying how he was an Eisenhower Republican and that Ron Paul is the only politician who came close to that for him, and that every other Republican is full of crap. That sparked a heated debate about foreign policy, but the precinct captain halted it pretty quickly. I counted 13 young people, and the one old guy, so I figured that made up the 14 RP votes, everyone else in my precinct was 40+.

My Caucus Experience...

Around 4:30 this afternoon, I walked outside on sidewalks near high traffic areas in the city holding a sign.
One side said "Vote for Ron Paul" and the other side said "Caucus tonight @ 7PM".
I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of waves, cheerful honks, and thumbs up I recieved.
Stayed out there for about an hour walking around, even if i didn't actually influence anyone it was nice to make my opinion known.
Walked over to my local meeting place around 6:30. I brought my girlfriend with me even though she was nervous to go.
Had to sweeten the deal with a promise of a nice pizza dinner afterward. Tried calling my one friend who was receptive to Ron Paul several times that day. Turns out he was going to a basketball game (even though i told him about the caucus many times over previous weeks)

When we showed up at the elementary school
My first impression was complete disorganization
My second impression was how many Ron Paul supporters were there.
Multiple people had questions about how to register Republican for the caucus
We were told that it wasn't necessary and basically anyone can partipate because its open
"We're not going to give you a blood test" one party affiliated individual remarked.

Some Paul supporters seemed concerned on that point having read places online
that it's necessary to have forms of ID and residence
But nevertheless we were broken into our specific precincts
and into separate classrooms of the school.

The people who poured into my room were overwhelmingly young and male
it was kind of awkward for my girlfriend who as in the minority!
Everyone signed in on the somewhat official looking sheet
but no one was required to show any identification
There were only three women who particpated in the caucus
My girlfriend, an old lady, and a mother with two children in tow
Out a total of 25 votes total

Turns out that our precinct captain is an obvious ron paul supporter
however the twist is that he will also be leading the precinct next door
due to some sort of? Shortage, lack of initiative

So early on we agree to change the leader to another member of the group
the original guy leaves to the other room but the new guy is uneasy
So after that, we switch to another one....
All this time things are seeming more and more hectic
People keep coming in, as we adjust the desks that are scattered around the room
There is a packet of information waiting to be read
and the speaker sort of stumbles their way through it
Immediately there was the sense that the majority of people supported Ron Paul
Only one person read a statement from Ron Paul and it was boring.
but nobody disagreed with it

Straw Poll Results

Romney 2
Santorum 3
Paul 20

After the straw poll we had a quick election
for precinct captain, vice, and secretary

They all ran unopposed and were all Paul supporters

We then elected delegates (we were allowed 2)

Only four people volunteered and they were all with us :)
They became the delegates and alternates
During the voting however the old lady was angry because she had no choice
She said, she basically couldn't vote (was for Romney i believe)
It was kind of sad actually

After that we had time for discussion of proposals to the Minnesota Republican platform
Nobody really had anything to say so I mentioned adding a part about protection of civil liberties
Considering the recent passing of NDAA and also pending legislationg like SOPA etc

Everyone got on board with that and we had a lively discussion about whether or not
it was right for Obama to assassinate US Citizens
Even the old lady who supported Romney eventually agreed that it was wrong
to indefinetly detain american citizens without a proper trial
We offically added a petition or whatever, to our party platform

Another topic was the opposition to "Obamacare" essentially
It passed too with only one nay vote

And with that the evening was concluded.
For my first caucus experience it was very enjoyable overall.

I posted this in a thread a while back, but I'll repost here:

I took my mother to the caucus tonight. We got there early, sat down in the auditorium, and waited for it all to begin.

And so it did. I listened to the random Republican ramblings that I've never much cared for... then they mention that they have a certain presidential candidate that will make a speech after the campaign volunteers. Wait, what? Did I hear that right? Who is it? Ron Paul. I had absolutely no clue.

He got drowning applause compared to everyone else. It was awesome. Talk about the highlight of my day, week, month, year.

Anyways, next comes the actual caucus. Paul wins my room with 12 votes. I think Mitt was second with 6? Paul secures 5 of 6 delegates. The 6th was undecided, but I definitely don't see him supporting Paul.

Next, the even more awesome part: I got the last delegate spot, and I beat the Minnesota SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE who was sitting right behind me the whole time by 1 vote.

Boom baby!

By the way, Santorum got 1 vote, and didn't even get a delegate nomination.

Also, a CNN reporter dropped by our room and asked if it was okay to film us while we were discussing resolutions about auditing the Fed.

I just want to thank all of you that stepped up and made calls, knocked on doors and shuttled people to the polls. After the fiasco in NV and literally the grassroots had to scramble to GOTV in 24 hours, since the campaign has been failing miserably in this area. Your efforts ensured we came out with a solid 2nd.
